Agriculture a Basis for the
Business of the Country
Too many business men, I am
afraid, have failed to appreciate the
importance of agriculture or their
dependence upon it. This has result-
ed, in many instances, in a lack of
sympathetic understanding of the
farmers' problems and of the difficul-
ties confronting him not only in pro-
ducing his crops or live stock but
also in marketing his products. Ag-
riculture fuishes the basis of much
of the country. There are many in-
dustries which are entirely depend-
ent upon it, such' as the manufacture
of farm implements and machinery,
the packing houses, the grain mer-
chants, and many others. The farm
products, of course, play a large
part in transportation. Neither the
business man or the farmer can
therefore, be genuinely and perma-
nently prosperous without the good
will and material aid of the other.
Whenever the business man does any-
thing to make the agriculture of his
section more profitable to the falners
he does something which will help
his own business, because there is
not in the United States, any center
that could continue to prosper inde-
pendently of the farming communities
surrounding it.--Edwin E. Meredith.

Treating for Smut
Don't forget the fomnula for the
blue stone method of treating seed
for smut.
P pound of bluestone dissolved in
5 gallons of water. Soak seed 3 to
4 minutes.
Be sure to follow this with the
lime treatment, 1 pound of unslacked
lime in 10 gallons of water. Soak
seed 2 to 3 minutes.
No method of treating seed has as
yet been discovered which is not
slightly injurious ot the seed, reduc-
ing the germinating strength, but
the bluestone, followed by lime is
the nearest to perfection that is
known.

I'm frazzled out. My owner says I
do not pay, and that I ought to sing
and lay. I wish he had to sit out
here and live on pickings all the
year. I'll bet a half cent, by jing,
he wouldn't lay from now till spring."

Novels From Serial Stories.
The 4ngenuity of members of the
Junior Red Cross at :Boise, Idaho, has
developed a custom which their elders
are beginning to copy. For patients
in the public health service hospitals
who do not like to read serial maga-
zine stories week by week, t'hey are
clipping current serials and binding
them, thus providing after publication
has been completed, novels for the

"Canning Compounds
The United States Department of
Agriculture warns housewives against
the use of any preservative powder or
canning compound in home canning.
Their use encourages careless and
uncleanly work, and in large amounts
they may, have serious affects upon
digestion and health. It is entirely
practicable to put up fruits and veg-
' stables so that they will keep in-
definitely by processing the products
with heat. There is no use for risk
by the use of canning powders.
Boric or salicylic acid is the basis
of most canning compounds on the
market today. The directions on the
package usually call for one tea-
spoonfull of the compound to one
quart of fruit or vegetables. The
use of boric or salicylic acid, since
they may be detrimental to health,
s regarded by the Department of
Agriculture as a violation of the
Fedca.al Food and Drug Act. The
laws of many states also prohibit
the sale of goods containing boric or
salclylic acid.
