This fall has seen two straight
months of bodies being recovered from
Totten Inlet.
In September, the Mason County
coroner asked for the public’s help
in identifying a body found on a Tot-
ten Inlet beach. The body of the ful-
ly clothed man was found at Totten
Shores near Somers Drive.
The body was later identified, with
the public’s help, as belonging to
Lance H. Willits, 'a 49-year—old Olym-
pia resident who had drown after fall-
ing off a sailboat.
His body was found Sept. 5, but Ma-
son County Coroner Wesley Stockwell
noted that Willits’ exact date of death
BRIEFS
has yet to be determined, as has the
exact reason Why he fell overboard.
“We are awaiting toxicology re
sults,” Stockwell said. “He lived on
his sailboat, in Mason and Thurston
county waters, and was identified
after photos of his tattoos were pub-
lished.”
Willits’ family has been notified.
Nearly two months later, another
body was recovered from Totten Inlet,
this time from shellfish harvesting ar-
eas on Arcadia Point.
Stockwell told the Journal that
the body found Oct. 28 near Windy
Point in Totten Inlet belonged to Geof-
frey M. Layton, a 64-year-old Shelton
resident who died of a gunshot wound
that was determined to be suicide.
Layton’s family has been notified.
