Transit looking to expand
Mason Transit is considering a
proposed budget that would spend
just over $6.7 million to pay for ex-
panded services in 2008.
Managers of the system have
a plan to add another 7,000 ser-
vice hours spread across fixed
routes and dial-a-ride services
next year. This represents an in-
crease of 14 percent that would
bring total service hours to
56,400. Spending would increase
by 5 percent.
That's according to information
provided by Kathy Cook, admin-
istrative services manager of the
publicly funded bus system. Ma-
son Transit operates 16 coaches
on fixed routes, 21 smaller rigs
that provide dial-a-ride service to
callers who make an appointment,
and 25 vanpool vehicles. The plan
is to spend just over $3.8 million
on salaries and benefits and just
under $1.8 million on infrastruc-
ture.
The building plan includes
spending $635,000 on a new refu-
eling facility at its operations cen-
ter on Johns Prairie Road.
For the third year in a row, the
rising cost of filling up finds the
bus system spending more than
projected on fuel. The board bud-
geted $306,800 for fuel in 2007 but
now expects to spend $377,423.
Proposed for 2008 is the spending
of $485,000, an amount 58 per-
cent higher than what was pro-
posed when the 2007 budget was
approved toward the end of last
year.
A local sales tax is expected to
provide 51 percent of next year's
revenue, with state operating
grants providing another 34 per-
cent.
The Mason County Transpor-
"tation Authority Board will take
public comment on the proposed
spending plan at 4 p.m. on Tues-
day, November 20, in the adminis-
trative offices at 790 Johns Prairie
Road. Board members intend to
approve the budget at a meeting
scheduleff for December 11 at the
same location.
From the November 15, 1907, Ma.
son County Journal:
Andrew B. Johnson, a rigging-sling-
er in Simpson Camp 2, met accidental
death Wednesday by being caught
between two logs. He was brought to
town on a special engine, but expired
soon after arriving.
This office has just printed a new
telephone directory, which has been
corrected to date and is being dis-
tributed to all subscribers. Miss Etta
Fredson states that it would expedite
connections if patrons would use the
numbers when making calls, as it
saves the new operators the necessity
of looking up names on the list.
