CHLORINE CLIMBERVILLE'S LONG-AWAITED return to state plays
out in Federal Way's one-time Pan-Am Games venue, the Weyerhaeuser/
King County Aquatic Center, during Friday afternoon's prelims. Strik-
ing a hasty pose between events are (from left) Kathryn Myers, Hayley
Barnard, Brittany Janda, Sydney Gaa and Kelsey Frazer. Exuberant
in the wake of their finals-qualifying performance in the 4x50 in the
nearmost shot are sophomore Sydney (left) and ninth-grader Brittany.
Close, are they? The Climbers' historic state competitors? "Oh! Yeah,"
intones Kelsey, just a sophomore. "We always get along. We're just like
a family..."

Bellyache, butterflies notwithstanding
By STEVE PATCH
The first time-qualified state
ensemble in Climber swim girls'
history left butterflies and belly-
aches in its wake last weekend in
the all-Washington showdown in
Federal Way.
Boasting school-record creden-
tials but hampered by first-time
jitters and pains even the doctors
couldn't figure out, Shelton's girls
set the bar modestly for Climber
contingents to come.
Although they exceeded expec-
tations with a berth in the finals
and a 12th-place finish in the first
of their two relay races, the Climb-
ers were unable to improve on
their season-best clockings - three
of which represented new all-time
SHS records.
"BUT THEY WERE close,"
says Chad Youngquist, who shared
'I curled up
in a ball and
started bawling
my eyes out:
the head-coaching helm once again
with fellow veteran Rob Phelan.
"It's not like they did poorly.
They did really well. Their times
on the relays were almost all at
their PRs. And we had some that
dropped time significantly.
"Hayley Barnard dropped time
in her leg of the 400 free relay. And
then Kathryn Myers: She dropped
a bunch of time.
"But to get the relay times to
drop significantly they all have to
be on. And the rest of the group
was a little bit more inconsistent,
whereas at districts they all got
PRs."
BUTTERFLIES?
"Oh! Of course," says one of the
Climbers' five state competitors,
sophomore veteran Kelsey Frazer.
She laughs. "Cuz I'm the starting
(leg) for the relays. And once I got
up there I just had butterflies like
crazy and got really nervous."
Adrenalin tends to come to the
rescue, though, does it?
"Big time," says Kelsey. "And
you can't hear 'em cheering or
anything like that, so it's just like,
'Oh, it's just like practice; just go
faster.'"
That the jitters were a factor is
certainly to be expected, reminds
Coach Youngquist.
"When they went to districts
they had a mission," he says of
his qualifiers. "They had a couple
of real goals. They had a rivalry
with another team, and they re-
ally wanted to perform well to beat
that team. They wanted to qualify
for state. And, you know, they had
some real ambitions tied up with
that meet.
"AND THIS MEET: They
wanted to do well; they really did.
But when they saw all of that
talent and that big building, some
of the other ambitions went to the
wayside.
"And I think you need to have
more than just 'I wanna do well'
with stress. They needed some
personal goals, where they really
wanted to place in the top eight -
or whatever it was. We needed it.
"It needed to be something for
the team: something bigger than
them. But when they got to state
it was, I think, 'I wanna do well.'
Ya know?
"And then you add that stress
of the competition there and just
the enormity of that meet and that
facility..."
BELLYACHE ABOUT IT, did
they? The Climbers?
No, that wasn't the problem
- though our young friend Kelsey
did indeed have a legitimate corn-
plaint come, er, gut-check time.
"Yeah, it started like Monday,
in the evening," says the young
sprint star, taking you back to
just four days before state. "I had
really bad, like, side pains. And so
my room rushed me to the hospi-
tal - cuz I curled up in a ball and
started bawling my eyes out."
Two years earlier she'd had the
same symptoms, says Kelsey, and
at that time doctors feared ap-
pendicitis before attributing it to

out victory over Timberline last
week.
Coach Curt Snyder's girls won
18-0 in the varsity go-around and

tering 429 series on games of 243
