swollen lymph nodes.
"So we went to the hospital,"
says the sophomore, referring to
the second episode, this past week.
"And they did a whole bunch o'
tests. And they did a CAT scan.
"AND IT SHOWED that I had
something wrong with my appen-
dix. And they were like, 'Well, go
home, and if the pain progresses
or gets any worse we want you to
come back and see us.'"
The next morning she went to
school, says Kelsey. "And then I
went to practice and I couldn't
swim cuz it hurt," she says.
"And then Wednesday we had
to go back to the hospital because I
was in pain again, like, really bad.
And so we went back and we got,
like, blood tests. And my white
cell count was, like, low or high or
something."
HIGH FROM FIGHTING the
infection?
"Yeah," says Kelsey. "And so
they did an ultrasound and they
saw that, like, my colon was de-
formed or something."
It gets worse:
"They put me on Vicodin," says
the Highclimber. "It's a, like, ex-
treme pain pill. And so they put
me on that - and it wasn't help.
ing.
"And so they thought maybe
I was having a small, like, aller-
gic reaction to that so it wouldn't
work. And so I stopped taking that
and my shoulder medicine."
What? The anti-inflammatory
for the shoulder tendinitis she'd
been suffering for much of the sea-
son?
"Yeah," says Kelsey. "Cuz they
said, like, I might overdose with
all the medicine..."
THE UPSHOT? PAIN in her
shoulder far worse than even before?
"Uh-uh," says Kelsey, sounding
a little incredulous herself. "Cuz
with me focusing on my side I
didn't really think about my shoul-
der.
"And the first day at state my
stomach sorta hurt, and so I was
really cautious, like, diving in and
stuff. But then the second day I
was fine."
And what did the doctors final-
ly come up with as the culprit if it
wasn't the appendix?
"They guessed that it was an
infection in my side," says Kelsey.
"They weren't quite sure what..."
Tough cookie, is she? The bit-
ty sophomore laughs modestly.
'Teah," she says. "I've done a lot
of sports and been injured. I had
really bad shin splints last year in
track..."
