The Climber volleyball girls
wrapped up their season with a
flourish last week, landing a pair
of honorable-mention spots on the
all-conference list.
So singled out by vote of the
Western Cascade Conference's
head coaches were the Climb-
ers' lone seniors, setter Carissa
Krumpols and middle blocker
Marissa Hill.
The two fourth-year veterans
had played especially key roles
in the Climbers' season finale, a
loss-streak-ending victory in four
games over visiting Clover Park
on the hosts' traditional Senior
Recognition Night.
"They played really well," says
coach Steve Morgan. "It's kinda
nice to go out with a win."
HIS ALL-LEAGUERS' strengths,
adds Coach, were obvious even in
defeat - regrettably commonplace
in a rebuilding season that ended
with just three wins in 14 match-
es.
"Carissa's strength is she's really
a competitor," says Morgan. "She
really worked through pain. She
had a knee injury this year and
she worked through that.
"She just has the will to win,
and what she may lack in talent
she makes up for with effort and
perseverance.
"And Marissa's strength is
her consistency. She improved
throughout the year and through-
out her career, and she probably
played her best volleyball at the
end of her career, which is a testa-
ment to her and how she wants to
improve.
"AND YOU KNEW what you
were gonna get with Marissa. You
didn't have to worry about that.
You knew that she was gonna give
you her best, but she wasn't gonna
have these really high games and
really low games.
"And she actually got mentally
better throughout the season
- smarter: where to put the ball.
She didn't, you know, jump as high
as some other middles, and so she
adapted.
"She hit more angles, and she
hit off-speed - little things so she
could be successful."
TEAM AWARDS were accord-
ed as usual - by vote of the Climb-
ers themselves.
Varsity honorees included ju-
nior Briana McKinley (MVP), Ms.
Krumpols (leadership award win-
ner), Ms. Hill (Coach's Award win-
ner), junior Courtney White (most
inspirational) and sophomore Mi-
chelle Davis (most improved).
The junior varsity, coached by
Steve Beck and Liz (deWaalMale-
fyt) Canright, yielded these honor-
ees: MVP Carly Madison, leader-
ship winner Nicole Brown, most
inspirational Jessica Lanman and
Coaches' Award ,winner Hanna
Erickson.
EXPECT TO SEE 'em all back
next year, does he? Coach Mor-
gan?
"Yes - except for the seniors,"
he quips, laughing. 'Teah, I'm
looking forward to it.
'Tou know, one thing I really
liked about these girls is they
never got too down after a loss.
You know, they were disappointed
right afterwards, but the next day
at practice you really couldn't tell
whether we'd won or lost. They
knew what they needed to work
on, and they were always willing
to work on it.
"And that's something I was
trying to work on all year, is that
'When you win, you know, you act
like you've been there before, and
when you lose you use it as a guide
to getting better.'"
