bituaries BELFAIR RESIDENT Billie Lee Scott, a familiar face around North Mason, especially when she was riding her metallic purple trike through town, died Thursday, November 8, in Bremerton. Billie Lee Scott Belfair resident Billie Lee Scott died of respiratory failure on Thurs- day, November 8, in Bremerton. She was 68. She was born on May 21, 1939 in Seattle. She graduated from Cen- tral Kitsap High School in 1956. In 1976 she married Charles "Scotty" Scott in Reno, Nevada. Mrs. Scott was retired from civil service as a timekeeper at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and had also worked as a cashier at the Lucky Dog Casino. Mrs. Scott was perhaps best known for her metallic purple trike. An avid adventurer, she cruised cross-country on her trike, back- packed the Olympics and enjoyed week-long trail rides. She was involved with the Red Hat Society, the Olympic Chapter of Women on Wheels and the Trails End Community Club. She also en- joyed camping, sea cruising, poker, fishing and football. Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her sons Ross Murker and his wife, Darla, of Bremerton and Jeff Murker and his fianc6e, Lisa Rogich, of Saint Paul, Minnesota; daughter Mary Thomas of Belfair; her stepdaughter Denise Monroe of Belfair; and many grand- children and several great-grand- children. No services will be held at her request. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital in Seattle. Arrangements are under the direction of the Anatomy Gifts Registry. Richard Gruber Belfair resident Richard A. Gru- ber died Saturday, November 3, at Belmont Terrace in Bremerton. He was 84. He was born December 5, 1922 in Liberty Center, Ohio, to Clifford Thorn- ton and Mary (Klaar) Gruber. He gradu- ated in 1941 and joined the Unit- ed States Naval Service as an aviation machin- ist during World War II. Richard He and his Gruber family moved to Washington in 1946 where he went to work for the South Kitsap School District as a mechanic and bus driver. He owned and operated a gas station and later a used-car garage, both in Port Orchard. He also raced stock cars for Red's Tex- aco. Lastly, he worked as a mainte- nance mechanic for Mission Creek Youth Camp in Belfair before retir- ing. He was a founding member of the North Mason Eagles Aerie 4226 in Belfair where he served as Past Worthy President. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters, all from Ohio. Survivors include his companion of 18 years, Vera Rawlings of Bel- fair; his son Larry Gruber of Port Orchard; his daughters Louise An- derson of Fort Fraser, British Co- lumbia, Canada, and Joan Sauer of Port Orchard; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held November 11 at the North Mason Letters to the editor ... Proud of his brother Editor, The Herald: The school board election is his- tory and the people have spoken loudly! Congratulations to all the winners. I wish you all success in the years ahead. That being said, this is a letter of appreciation to my brother, Glenn Landram, tbr his service the past several years on the school board. I just recently moved back to the area after being gone for the last 22 years, but I did on occasion make the trip from Des Moines for sev- eral school board meetings. Glenn never wavered in his con- victions! He stood, often alone, and faced concerned townspeople with grace and dignity. He always let even the most vocal opponents of his concepts speak without inter- ruption. Many meetings I would witness personal attacks on his character and ideas, and then I would hear him thank them for voicing their concerns. Glenn led when it was hard to lead! During his term as president, he has been blamed, rightly or wrongly, for every perceived prob- lem this district has encountered, yet he handled it with the utmost class, even as a very organized group kept delivering the insults and per- sonal affronts. He has weathered the storm! I have learned from him and been inspired by him for 50 years; it just so happens that I had to share the past four of them with the public. I love you, big brother.
