"Because the girls' rugby sevens team won state last summer, we were invited to the Las Vegas Invitational, which invites teams t~om all over the world," said head coach Chris Nesmith, head coach. "Our bracket is for high school teams only." The tournament runs from Feb. 10-12. To attend the tournament, Nesmith said the girls' rugby team needs to raise $5,000 for food, airfare, hotel and renting a car. To raise this money, the girls' team is hosting a silent auction and raffle from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Grove Street Brewhouse. Entrance into the auc- tion is free of charge. "We had a booth at OysterFest, so a por- tion has been raised but we're not quite there yet," Nesmith said. "We're about $2,500 short." There will be a raffle, with tickets selling for $2 each. At the auction, the team has a few big-ticket items to offer, including a rugby jersey signed by Waisale Serevi. "Waisale Serevi is the Michael Jordan of rugby and he plays for the Fuji team," Ne- smith said. "Getting this jersey is like get- ting an autographed Michael Jordan Chi- cago Bulls jersey." Serevi runs a rugby training business in Seattle now and has run a camp that the Shelton girls' team attended. Another big-ticket item is a rugby jer- sey signed by every member of the U.S. team. "The USA rugby sevens organization has actually helped us out a lot and donated the USA jersey," Nesmith said. Nesmith said that the girls, team h~s raised every cent to get everything they've needed in the past. .... : .... "The team takes nothing for granted and we've gotten a tremendous amount of sup- port from the community," he said: One bit of support came from recently ap- pointed Mason County Comissioner Steve Bloomfield, who has helped the team get its own jerseys. Until now, the girls' team has been using jerseys from the boys' team. "I thought it was a great thing for the whole community to have this team out competing at the national level," Bloomfield said. "I thought it was unfortunate the team didn't have its own jerseys and the commu- nity didn't know more about them." Bloomfield approached Seattle Shellfish regarding the jerseys. "I was working with Seattle Shellfish and had for 10 years," Bloomfield said. "We've had a policy for a few years to be a part of the community. We want to give back to the community." Paul Herris, operations manager with Seattle Shellfish, said the company has helped out other young organizations in the past and is arranging to purchase the jer- seys for the girls' team. "We're a part of the community and we want to support the community and the kids' programs," Herris said. "I knew there was a rugby team but didn't know a lot about it. When we were contacted about it and their need, I though it was a great thing to support." If the funding comes through - and ac- cording to the countdown clock on usasev- ens.com/las-vegas on Thursday, Nov. 17 - the Shelton girls' rugby team will be com- peting against teams from around the world in approximately 84 days. Shelton junior Katie Chapman holds onto the ball durJ match last summer. Chapman is part of the Sl elton ru team, which has been invited to the Las Vega Invitati tional tournament February 10 through FebrUary 12. , Zumba Toning , Zumba Classes O Tae Kwon Do Classes Every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. FREE with membership .
