Belfair’s Ruth Kessler brought a proposal before
the Port of Allyn commissioners Nov. 1 to purchase
property and build a Skate park, after conversing
with Port of Allyn Executive Director Lary Coppola
and collecting signatures from residents.
“I understand that it has been attempted in
Beards Cove before, but as we all know, location, lo—
cation, location,” said Kessler, who cited proximity
to state Route 3, Harrison Belfair Urgent Care and
Hurricane Ridge, and the potential to attract retail
business “associated with such an endeavor.”
Kessler touted the support of One Ball Jay owner‘
Matt Cummins for the proposed skate park, noting
he also referred her to the Seattle—based Grindline

ect, formerly known as the Tony Hawk Foundation.
“Lots of us in this town believe that this is a
great opportunity and (the) right timing, coming out
of COVID,” Kessler said. “It’s an outdoor activity
where people aren’t necessarily too close in proxim-
ity to each other, but they can still cooperate and
learn from each other.”
“Sounds cool to me,” Port of Allyn District 1 Com-
missioner Judy Scott said, adding that she and Bon-
nie Knight had previously worked toward a similar
goal, and “I think that would be awesome if we could
do it.”
“I will go, in my spare time, and talk to some of
the local businesses,” said Kessler, Who shared plans
to Visit Shumaker Chiropractic and Cigar Land V

Port of Allyn reacts favorably to proposed skate park
skateboarding. It’s an Olympic sport now, so it’s re-
ally not quite the counterculture that it used to be.
It’s more mainstream culture.”
Kessler cited what she described as the 3‘great
success” of the skate park in South Kitsap, since “the
kids pretty much maintain it themselves,” which she
sees as a natural tie—in to high school students’ Com-
munity-service requirements to graduate.
Scott continued to compliment the proposal, while
District 3 Commissioner John Sheridan concurred
With Scott, recalling skateboarding as a youth, not-
ing how “I used to drop into 14, 15-foot bowls, but I’m
paying the price for it today.”
Kessler said her proposal’s resident signatories
range from real estate agents to the medical field,
