Tahuya artist
displays work
Paintings by Arlene Smith of
Tahuya are on display this month
at Belfair Post Office.
A self-taught artist, Mrs.
Smith has been wielding a paint
brush since she was 14 and
painted her first picture as a
special gift, something different,
to give her mother who was in the
hospital. A friend who did oil
painting had suggested she try the
art and had showed her how to
mix the paints. Her first effort
was a copy of a picture on a
lampshade which she knew her
mother admired. By the time she
was through high school she had
sold several paintings.
Mrs. Smith presently does
negative retouching for
photographic studios, working at
home, but plans to devote full
time to her painting after the first
of the year. Recently some
samples of her work, done for a
commercial enterprise, were on
display at Washington State
University.
Next spring Mrs. Smith plans
another exhibit of her work at the
post office, paintings of local
scenes. She is interested
particularly in creating pictures of
old buildings of the area.
Husband Gary and a daughter,
Sarena, 6, complete the Smith
family.
THREE CITED
Three persons were
apprehended, two of them
juveniles, after the sheriff's
dei6artment received a complaint
that persons were trespassing in
Belfair State Park after closing
hours, destroying state property.
CAT FOUND, DOG LOST
A small long-haired brown
and black female cat was
reported found in Belfair Nov.
15 and a German shepherd was
reported lost, same area, same
day.
PAINTINGS by Arlene Smith of Tahuya are on display at Belfair Post Office
during November. Above is the artist, pictured with her daughter, Sarena.
LILA OSBORN, recently hired kindergarten teacher, is seen with some of
her students in the Allyn School classroom.

BASKETBALL
As winter finds us this year
NM is preparing itself for Bulldog
basketball and wrestling.
On the basketball scene Coach
Lance Thurston returns to guide
the '76 team. "l'm happy to be
back," says Coach Thurston. "I
think we will have a good
season." Thurston returns as
coach after keeping out of it since
leading North Mason to a
Nisqually League championship in
'73 and '74.
Because most of the starters
were graduated last year there are
a lot of new faces vying for a
chance at varsity. "We won't
know who the top five starters are
until our first game," says
Thurston. "It's going to be tough
to choose; we've got 18 kids who
are real close and only 12 will get
varsity."
A good J.V. team is predicted
with *players close to varsity
strength on the team and other
underclassmen who are coming on
strong. "There are about five
sophomores who are looking
good, also," adds Thurston. "One
of them could make varsity."
All Bulldog fans are invited to
get a preview of what is to come
as "Bulldog Fan Night" unfolds
tonight at the high school gym.
"We would like to get out the
fans tonight," Thurston
commented.
A coach clinic is planned for
those interested in "Bulldog Fan
Night" and will be followed by
the annum "Blue and White"
game, where NM High School
teams scrimmage against each
other. It is a good chance for
anyone to get a glimpse of what is
in store for the '76 season.
The jamboree game. Dec. 2
will be played out by a platoon.
"We'll play a mixture
