About 350 persons, including
more than 200 4-H members from
22 Mason County 4-H clubs, attend-
ed the annual achievement night at
the Shelton Armory. Awards and
achievement pins were handed out
to members and 23 adult leaders.
A special tribute was given to An-
drew Kruiswyk Jr., who was leav-
ing at the end of the year. Extension
Agent Kruiswyk had completed 11
years of service to the county.
Mrs. Ella Edman of Allyn was
presented with a 5,000-hour plane-
watching certificate by Sergeant
James Mahon of the Grays Harbor-
Mason County Air Force Section.
The Allyn pest had been in opera-
tion for more than four years. It was
started by Mrs. Edman's son, Jim.
When Mrs. Edman moved to Allyn
she took over the post. The Ground
Observer Corps was a civilian oper-
ation supported by the Air Force.
Registered nurse Mrs. Pearl
Hanby was appointed adminis-
trator of Mark E. Reed Memorial
Hospital in McCleary. Prior to the
appointment, she had been super-
intendent of nurses at Sarah House
Sanitarium at Ailyn.
Florette Barnes was crowned
1957 homecoming queen by senior
end Tom Rowe and senior fullback
Dick Flakus of the Shelton High-
climbers. Florette was presented a
game football signed by all the play-
ers. Inspirational awards went to
A1 Smith, "speedy junior halfback,"
and "Stan Carlson, "clever senior
quarterback." Del Cole, co-publisher
of The Shelton-Mason County Jour-
nal, made the awards. Shelton 33,

Christmas tree cutting and pro-
cessing operations began. The firms
reported in operation were the G.R.
Kirk Company, Canadian-Ameri-
can and the Douglas Fir Christmas
Tree Company, all of Johns Prairie;
I. Hofert and Harris and Thomas,
both near the Shelton Airport; Ma-
son County Christmas Tree Com-
pany, Bayshore; and the Hunter
Brothers cutting for the Kirk Com-
pany in the Skokomish Valley. All
companies reported an excellent
crop of trees with sufficient frost to
"set" the needles. A mobile employ-
ment unit was set up in Shelton for
the convenience of Christmas tree
workers, and more than 250 skilled
and unskilled workers had signed
up for jobs. Of these, about 150 were
experienced and 100 had no previ-
ous experience.
Zontians held a smorgasbord. On
the menu were Mrs. A1 Dickinson's
pickled herring; Mrs. Carl Morgan's
baked beans; salads by Mrs. M.S.
Preppernau, Mrs. James Needham
and Mrs. Susie Pauley; and turkeys
roasted by Mrs. Lee Kiefer, Mrs. El-
sie Wilson and Mrs. Louie Larson.
Mrs. Jim Pauley was in charge of
the barbecued salmon; also featured
were homemade breads by Mrs.
Cliff Wivell, Mrs. Irene Forrest and
Mrs. Alma Catto, meatballs by Mrs.
Cliff Mifflin and Mrs. Forrest and a
variety of homemade pies by every
member of the Zonta Club, as well
as relishes, molded salads and pick-
les. Proceeds from the smorgasbord
were used for the Mason County
