Slump in housing
puts .crimp in state
forecast of revenue

At last report, sales-tax rev-
enue. in the county and the state
was still rising but at a slower
pace than that which attended a
boom fueled by shoppers recover-
ing from the shock of 9/11.
Mike Gowrylow of the Washing-
ton State Department of Revenue
has been keeping track of the sales
tax in the years since September
11, 2001, when terrorists attacked
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C. Uneasiness which fol-
lowed the attacks and the death
of approximately 3,000 people is
thought to be a contributing fac-
tor to a slowdown in the growth
of total taxable retail sales. The
sales tax generates about half of
the state's revenue and funds a
significant chunk of the spending
by Mason County and the City of
Shelton.
"It's the biggest single compo-
nent of tax revenue," Gowrylow
said.
After several years of steady
growth, that component reached
a plateau in 2001, when the state
as a whole had $84.4 billion in tax-
able retail sales. He described the
year after 9/11 as "real flat" based
on sales of $84.8 billion. "People
weren't buying, and there were
