Health officials urge
folks to get vaccines
Mason County public health
officials are urging residents to
get flu shots.
The officials note that during
the holiday season, as crowds
in malls and other public places
increase, so does one's risk of ex-
posure to germs such as the in-
fluenza virus. One way fblks can
decrease the potential of' getting
the flu this season is by getting
vaccinated.
The National Centers for Dis-
ease Control has also announced
the second annual National
Influenza Vaccination Week
(NIVW), taking place Novem-
ber 26 to December 2. As part of
the CDC's and local health de-
partments' continuous efforts to
promote timely flu vaccination,
NIVW serves to remind people
who have not yet been vaccinated
that the time to get a flu vaccine
continues into winter - through
January or later, when the in-
fluenza season typically peaks.
Flu immunization rates are low
for children and adults. Wash-
ington rates are 22.8 percent for
young children and 72.4 percent
for adults over age 65 -- slightly
above the national average but
below national and state goals of
90 percent.
IN WASHINGTON, flu season
usually peaks in January or later
so getting vaccinated now helps
prevent flu throughout the sea-
son. Officials say that everyone
can benefit from a flu shot; how-
ever, it's crucial for many people
who are at high risk for complica-
tions. This includes anyone over
50, children 6 months to 5 years
old, and children and adults with
chronic medical conditions such
as asthma, diabetes or heart
disease. Also at high risk, are
pregnant women and residents
of nursing homes or long-term
care facilities. Getting a flu shot
protects you, your friends and
thmily, so anyone who lives with
or cares fbr a high-risk adult or
child younger than 5 years old
should also get a flu shot.
Flu vaccine is still available in
the community. Check with lo-
cal providers or call the Mason
County Flu line at 360-427-9670,
extension 599 on how to get your
flu shot.
