Chuck is a structural engineer. But when they
helped their son Cody launch Epic Ales three
years ago, the Seattle couple decided distilling
looked like fun.
"We decided if he could do it, we can do it,"
Jan said. "We're riding on the coattails of our
son."

tall ceilings, and is on a well-traveled stretch
of highway. The couple rebuilt the front of the
building. Their son will produce the whiskey
recipes.
As for the name, "We bought a hardware
store, so it's Hardware Distillery," Jan said. "It
just was automatic."
When the distillery opens, it will offer free
samples and sell bottles of whiskey -5,000 emp-
ty bottles are inside the building, ready to be
filled.
The couple is seeking partnerships with lo-
cal producers of such food items as oysters and
salmon.
"Our goal is to make spirits to pair with food
... to go with the bounty of the Hood Canal," Jan
said.
The couple sold T-shirts sporting their logo
during Celebrate Hoodsport, and residents have
been popping in to check on their progress.

The building, constructed in 1930, has been
