Mary M. Knight freshman Jaycee Valley, left, looks for a teammate to pass to while under pressure from MMK sophomore Miranda Sowle during
girls' basketball practice on Nov. 15.
By EMILY HANSON
In the middle of its first
week of practice, the Mary
M. Knight girls' basket-
ball team was already pre-
paring for a league title
battle.
"Basically, it's going to
be us and Taholah bat-
tling for first again," head
coach Lance Valley said.
"I think it's going to be a
fun season. We're smaller
but we're going to be fast-
er. We're going to do more
pressing on the court, us-
ing our quickness."
Under Valley in his
13th season as head
coach, the Lady Owls re-
turn to the court this win-
ter after a second-place
finish in the 1B Coastal
League and in Southwest
District IV. Ashley Sowle
is the l 1-girl team's lone
senior.
"Junior Hannah Frost
did really good last year
so we're looking for big
things from her," Valley
said. "Sophomore Miranda
Sowle and freshman Jay-
cee Valley both got honor-
able mentions last year."
He said the team has
been working hard so far
this season.
"They're focused," Val-
ley said. "We're really de-
termined this year to beat
our nemesis, which is Ta-
holah."
Assistant coach Mandy
Valley said the Lady Owls
are closer this year than
they have been in the
past, which should help.
"Our strength is that
we're going to be quicker
with some good outside
shooters," the head coach
said. "Our weakness is
our height. All the girls
are within 1 or 2 inches
of each other so we're
shorter, but I think we'll
be good."
He said the team is still
young, but that even the
young players are experi-
enced varsity athletes.
"It'll be a lot of man-
to-man with some more
zone," Valley said. "We're
going to try to do more try to make it a more up-
trapping and I'm going to tempo game."
