SHS girls' basketball team led by juniors
By EMILY HANSON

The Shelton girls' basketball team will
be a young one.
On the varsity team, three juniors re-
turn to lead while the rest of the team is
new or played on junior varsity last year.
"We're really heavy on juniors and fresh-
men," said head coach Aaron Leth, who is
in his second year as head coach. "This is
good because we'll have them for another
couple years, and bad because we're still
young."
The returning juniors, Taylor Stroud,
Cheyenne Overlin and Chelsea Decicio,
played much of last seaso~n, which the team
ended with a 1-19 record.
"We got our first win in two years last
season," Leth said. "Then we lost by 10
to Olympia in our last game so we played
them really tough. It was, without a doubt,
the best game all year."
In order to improve upon last season's
record, Leth, assisted by Courtney Weeden
and Scott Deloney, has devised a different
game plan for the season.
"We're going to be playing a faster
game, more uptempo with more pressing
defense," he said. "We don't have a lot of
size, but we have a lot of speed. We'll prob-
ably play man-to-man 70 percent of the
time and zone 30 percent. We'll try to press
as much as we can."
Leth said Overlin will be a key contrib-
uter this year.
"She worked really hard last season," he
said. "She was voted into the all-star list at
summer camp after one day."
"We're really heavy
on juniors and
freshmen ... This
is good because
we'll have them
for another couple
years, and bad
because we're still
young."
He said the team also has some "up-
and-comers."
"We've got freshmen coming through
and one sophomore," Leth said. "Alyssa
York was here for practice every day an
hour early in the offseason."
He said the freshmen in particular are
working hard, adding that five will play on
the junior varsity team this season while
two have made the varsity squad.
"All the juniors played every tourna-
ment they could in the offseason," he said.
"They're working hard and our first game
is against Black Hills. They'll be tough."
Leth said the strength of the team lies
in its speed.
"Defensively, we're very tenacious," he
said. "Our weakness is our youth and that
we don't have a pure shooter. We're also
really undersized."

girls' basketball practice on Friday.
