Giddings. She is pictured with her children. Andrew will be seven years
old in December. The two-year-old is Katie, and Rebecca is three and a
half years of age.

Organizational
meeting slated
for December 6
All Mason County women
college graduates are invited to
the second organizational
meeting of the American
Association of University Women
at Olympic College, Extension
Center, Fourth and Cedar in
Shelton on December 6 at 7:30
p.m.
AAUW is the largest private
giver of funds to graduate
women and to community
groups for individual projects
ranging from art for children
programs to seven thousand
dollar grants to women in
professional schools and
thousand dollar grants to women
wishing to update or change
career fields.
The national organization
was founded in Boston in 1882
by Marion Talbot. This
association of women college and
university graduates has grown
from 65 members to some
200,000 with branches in every
state, the District of Columbia,
Puerto Rico and Guam. AAUW's
Educational Center is located in
Washington, D.C. and houses the
national staff officers as well as a
specialized library and materials
related to women and education.
Local branches of the AAUW
as well as state and national
associations, after in-depth
studies, have taken stands on
such issues as quality education,
school financing, public
disclosure laws, nuclear energy
and conservation programs.
AAUW is also vitally concerned
with programs for the elderly
and the family.

Her bread to go to bazaar
"My time is divided between
nay church and my family," says
Helen Giddings, member of St.
David's Episcopal Church and
mother of three.
She teaches Sunday school
and serves as superintendent of
the Sunday school. She is a
vestry member, and she is
assisting with St. David's bazaar
to be held on December 1 in the
church parish hall. Bible study is
held in her home each
Wednesday evening.
Born and reared in Aberdeen,
Helen left her home town at the
age of 18 years to attend a
beauty academy in Tacoma.
After her graduation one year
later she went to Florida to learn
that her Washington beautician
license was not valid in that
state.
"So," she says, "l worked as
a meat cutter in a cafeteria."
In 1963 she was married in
Aberdeen to Veme Giddings.
The couple's children are
two-year-old Katie; Rebecca,
who is three and a half years
old; and Andrew, who will be
seven in December.
Helen (known as Joey to her
friends) went as a bride to Tom's
River, New Jersey where Veme
was stationed as an officer in the
U.S. Navy. They lived there until
1967 when they came to
Shelton.
"Verne attended the patrol
academy," says Joey, "and upon
his graduation he was stationed
in Shelton."
Although she has traveled 46
states, Mrs. Giddings has always
remembered Washington as
home.
"My great-grandfather came
to the Aberdeen area about 90
years ago," she explains, "and he
was one of the founders of the
city. He was also one of the
writers of the state constitution
M,Y family has been in
Washington contihiiously since
that time."
In her journeying Joey has
worked at many trades. She has
been employed in wig salons, in
ladies' apparel shops, in book
stores. She has been beautician
and cosmetician. In Shelton she
was employed in Nell's
Pharmacy
"We like Shelton," she
declares. "It's a safe place to
live, and the climate is pleasant.
What snow we have is nothing
compared to that in New Jersey.
We were often snowed in there
for days at a time, and had to
dig our way out to get to a
store."
Her hobbies include the
arranging of flowers, and she
utilizes both fresh and dry
materials. She knits. She bakes
and decorates cakes. She loves
animals.
"I used the kids as an excuse
to have pets," she laughs, "and
they learned to love them as I
do."
Household animals include a
sort-of Dachshund named
Speedy; an elkhound-Samoyed
crossbreed; a kitten called
Murphy and a rabbit whose

Joey Giddings is noted for
her cuisine. She often bakes
whole wheat bread for her
family, and will contribute this
specialty to the coming bazaar.
"It's an involved recipe," she
admits, "and a lot of work, but
it's a really fine bread and
everyone loves it. I think it is
worth the effort."
Whole Wheat Bread
6 C. lukewarm water
2 pkgs. dry yeast
¾ C. molasses or honey
2 C. dry milk
9 C. whole wheat flour
Dissolve yeast in water; add
sweetening, dry milk and flour.
Beat 100 strokes with large
spoon or wire whip until batter
is very smooth. Cover bowl at
this point and let dough rise
until double in size,
approximately 45 to 70 minutes.
2% Tbl. salt
% C. oil
6 to 8 C. whole wheat flour
allow 2 or 3 more C. of
flour for kneading
Pour oil on top of risen dough.
Sprinkle salt over oil. Fold oil
and salt into dough. Do not stir.
Sprinkle the rest of the flour,
about a cup at a time on the
mixture and fold in. Continue to
fold in flour until dough comes
easily away from sides and
bottom of mixing bowl. Turn
out on a floured kneading
surface. Knead until dough no
longer picks up additional flour.
Texture of dough should be
smooth and somewhat shiny.
Place in oiled bread bowl, cover
with damp cloth and let rise
until double in size (60 to 90
minutes). Punch down and let
rise again for about 60 minutes.
Turn out on kneading surface
and shape into four loaves. Place
in well oiled bread pans. Let rise
until center of loaf is about level
with top of pan. Place slits about
½ inch deep lengthwise of loaves.
Oil tops with pastry brush, and
sprinkle poppy seeds or sesame
seeds over top. Bake 45 to 60
minutes at 350 degrees. Done
loaves will resound with deep
hollow thump when tapped with
finger. Yields four 2¼ to 2½
pound loaves. It may be more
satisfactory to bake at 325
degrees in some ovens.

well in skillet in oil or fat, then
drain. Mix wine and mushroom
soup. Pour over browned
meatballs, cover and simmer for
approximately 30 minutes. Six
to eight servings.

directions, but use only 2% cups
milk. Cool, stir in nuts. Split
each cake layer in half crosswise
to make four layers. Put layers
together with pudding between
