The new pension program
also includes an $800 increase in
the annual rate paid to elderly
veterans of wartime periods for
whom education and loan
guaranty benefits has not been
made available. The language of
the bill limits this increase to
veterans of World War I and
earlier wartime periods.
Additionally, Congress
, approd an automatic increase
for pensioners each time there is
a cost-of-living increase in social
security benefits.
"What this means is that no
VA pension recipient will have
his pension reduced because of a
social security cost-of-living
increase, as has been the case in
the past," Murphy said.

Grange has membership gain
The Washington State Grange reported a membership gain to an
all-time high of 70,136. The new membership total exceeded the
announced goal of "70,000 members in the '70s," set by officers and
members in 1970. The 70,136 members also pushed Washington even
further out front as the number one Grange state in tile nation in
membership. The membership in Washington in 1970 was 60,000.
Infant mortality rate down
Washington state's infant mortality rate showed the largest
one-year decline in years according to state health officials. The rate
was 12.2 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1977, which is 2.2 deaths
lower than 1976. According to Dr. Robert Leahy, chief of the Office
of Community Health Services, improvements in both prenatal and
postnatal care, and advancements in medical technology are among
the reasons for the decrease.
Voting questions coming
Did you vote on November 7? Were you .registered but did not
vote? The Bureau of the Census will ask these and other questions
about voting in the 1978 elections in a sample of households in this
area this week. John E. Tharaldson, director of the bureau's regional
office in Seattle, stressed that no questions will be asked about party
affiliation or for whom a person voted.
