Owen to head group
Brad Owen of Shelton, has
been named state chairman of
the Serve the Children, Change
the World campaign of the Holt
International Children's Services.
Owen said the campaign is
designed to increase public
awareness of the Holt services
and to raise funds for the
agency.
Owen, state legislator, has
been one of the state's leading.
advocates of streamlining the
adoption laws. He has prepared
legislation concerning
foreign-born adopted children to
be introduced in the 1979
session.
The Holt service, according
to Owen, is a world leader in
placing adopted children. He said
in Holt's 22 years it has placed
more than 18,000 children in
permanent homes largely without
the benefit of any federal aid.
"In fact, if anything, the
federal government has been
aided by Holt. The Holt people
have broken much new ground
in placing children who
previously were difficult or
nearly impossible to place in
homes. These breakthroughs have
also aided the federal adoption
programs," Owen said.
"The purpose of the Holt
program is to see to it that every
child regardless of nationality or
race has the right to a fulfilling,
happy life with a family," Owen
said.
Toward that end, Owen said,
the Holt service has placed more
than 18,000 children in
permanent homes both in the
United States and in other
countries. He said the service
also has started providing family
counseling, temporary foster care
and pregnancy counseling. The
service offers both international
and domestic adoption programs.
He said as many children as
possible are placed in their native
Scientists schedule
Thanksgiving service
Members of First Church of
Christ Scientist have scheduled
their annual Thanksgiving service
for 11 a.m. Thursday. The
service, open to the public, will
be held in the church edifice at
302 Alder Street.
The hour-long meeting
includes scriptural readings and
hymns of thanksgiving, as well as
excerpts on the topic of
gratitude from the Christian
Science textbook, Science and
Health with key to the scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy.
The readings this year
include passages from Psalms: "I
will praise the name of God with
a song, and will magnify him
with thanksgiving... He healeth
the broken in heart, and bindeth
up their wounds."
And from Science and
Health: "Gratitude is much more
than a verbal expression of
thanks. Action expresses more
gratitude than speech."
Following the readings, time
has been set aside for Christian
Scientists to share their gratitude
for God's goodness and love.
Lucille Edwards and Ida
Sheeley, who are serving a term
as the congregation's readers, will
conduct the service which also
includes the president's
Thanksgiving proclamation.
countries, but there are many
more children in need of care
than can be placed in any
foreign country. Those who are
not placed domestically are
brought to the United States for
placement.
Owen said he accepted the
position as state chairman
because of his own positive
experience with the Holt service.
"My wife Nancy and I adopted a
Korean boy in 1975. The caring
and dedication of the Holt
people became obvious to us.
They are genuinely concerned
with finding the best possible
home for the child."
Owen said he will be making
appearances around |he state,
telling anyone interested enough
to listen about the work of the
Holt service.
Question of principles
Americanism ,is a question of
principle, of purpose, of
idealism, of character; it is not a
matter of birthplace or creed or
line of descent.
