Page A-8 Shelton-Mason County Journal - Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020 Small Business Saturday seen as more vital than ever By Kirchoxleitner kbox/eitner@masoncounh/.com Although Gov. Jay Inslee’s new COVID—19 policies will affect busi- nesses in the state, the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Council of Ma- son County promise local shoppers and merchants that it’s full steam ahead for the annual “Small Business Satur- day” event. The chamber has been a member of the Small Business Saturday Co- alition since the program was created by American Express in and Chamber CEO Heidi McCutcheon said she sees the event as but one method of helping to support local businesses year round, through the “Shop Small” movement. However, fewer are opening, and staying open, in the midst of the current economic crisis.” McCutcheon noted the occupancy limits for state businesses under the governor’s latest COVID guidance, and touted the ingenuity of city and county businesses in promoting themselves within those boundaries, citing one business that plans to offer $50 gift certificates that give a shopper a virtu- ally private experience within the store for half an hour. “These folks are doing what they can to keep their doors open,” McCutcheon said. “Our business community has a §--- in o What is changing strong track record of pulling itself up by its bootstraps, but you can do your part by choosing to support local en- trepreneurs, and helping us rebuild a healthy economy.” Small Business Saturday falls on Nov. this year, but McCutcheon re- iterated that she hopes consumers will “shop small” throughout the year, giv- en that a study by American Express found that an average of two-thirds of every dollar that’s spent at small busi— nesses stays in the community. Those small businesses directly em- ploy community members and spend- ing by those small businesses and their employees also supports local jobs. For every 10 jobs at a small business, an- other seven are supported in the com- munity, according to the same study. “Small Business Saturday cel- ebrates the impact small businesses have on communities across the coun- try,” McCutcheon said. “Every time you order curbside pickup from your favorite eatery, purchase a gift from the local boutique, or order online from a neighborhood business, you’re shop- ping small and making a difference.” I According to the Small Busi- ness Saturday Consumer Insights Sur- vey, 97% of consumers who shopped on Small Business Saturday agreed that small businesses were essential to their communities. The EDC expanded on this by citing the contributions of local businesses to area nonprofit organizations and chil- dren’s sports teams, and recommended that customers purchase gift cards to use when their favorite eateries and other businesses reopen.
