EII-S'lfQRBQE . l '1 r l l l Keep your Thanksgiving feasts re-safe and savory" By Boxleit ner kbox/e/tner@masoncounty com As people prepare Thanksgiving meals, Central Mason Fire & EMS is passing on some tips from the Nation- al Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to ensure feasts are as safe as they are savory. Thanksgiving is the peak day for home-cooking res, followed by Christ- mas Day, the day before Thanksgiv- ing, Easter and Christmas Eve. U.S. re departments responded to 1,630 home cooking res on Thanksgiving in 2018. According to the NFPA, cooking caused almost half of all reported home res and home re injuries, and was the second-leading cause of home re deaths, from 2014-18, dur- ing which unattended cooking acted as the leading contributor to cooking res and re deaths. ' The NFPA advises staying in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop, because the stove is where most cook- ing res in the home occur. Keep an eye on the food. Stay inside the home when cooking turkey so you can check it frequently. ' The NFPA acknowledged that a home s kitchen often serves as the heart of holiday gatherings such as Thanksgiving, thereby making it more appealing for children who want to be involved in its holiday preparations. That ,makes it especially important that adults ensure their kitchens and cooking procedures are safe for all ages. The NFPA advises keeping children at least 3 feet away from the stove and areas where hot foods or drinks are likely to be prepared or carried, whether you think they re hot or not, and that kids should likewise stay away from hot foods or liquids because steam or splashing from vegetables, gravy or coffee can cause serious burns. Knives should be kept out of the reach of children, and ensure that electric cords from electric knives, cof- fee makers, plate warmers or mixers SCHOOL BRIEFS Shelton school board meetings streamed ' The Shelton School Board s regular meetings are now being streamed live via YouTube by MasonWebTV. The board meets at 6 pm. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. A link to stream the live video will be posted on the district s website, calendar and Facebook page, the dis- trict states on its website. Comments and questions for the board members can be emailed to them directly. The emails won t be read aloud during board meetings, but the district states the board and staff members will respond. The email addresses are listed at https://www. sheltonschools.org/district/school board/contact info. I are not dangling off a kitchen counter within easy reach of a child. Matches and utility lighters should be stored out of childrens reach, pref- erably up high in a locked cabinet, and children should never be left unat- tended in a room with a lit candle. The NFPA recommends keeping kids out of the kitchen entirely, either with activities such as games, puzzles or books to keep them busyand en tertained, or by giving them holiday preparations that can be done outside of the kitchen. Ensure that everyone keeps the floor clear so no one trips over toys, pocketbooks or bags, and as always, check that your smoke alarms work by pushing the test button. Even without children present, adults should remain alert and careful in the kitchen. Just as you wouldn t drive while drunk or drowsy, the NFPA warns against using the stove or stovetop if you re sleepy or have consumed alco- hol. Stay in the kitchen while you re fry- ing, boiling, grilling or broiling food, and if you do leave the kitchen, even for a moment, turn off the stove. If you re simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly and remain in the home while food is cooking, using a timer to remind you which items are cooking. Anything that can catch re in- cluding oven mitts, wooden uten- sils, food packaging, towels or cur tains should be kept away from your stovetop. If you do experience a small cooking re, immediately leave the house and call 911 if you have any doubts about your ability to ght it, while closing the door behind you to help contain the re, but if you believe you can safely ght a stovetop re, smother the ames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is cooled. For an oven re, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. The NFPA continues to discourage the use of turkey fryers. Shelton Schools survey on healthcare clinics The Shelton School District seeks your comments as it explores the pos- sibility of placing a healthcare clinic on school grounds. The clinics, called school-based health care centers, increase student access to healthcare services such as routine wellness visits, sports physi- cals, mental healthcare, sick visits and prescription medication. A survey on the proposal takes about 10 minutes. Responses will be accepted until Dec. 18. The survey is at http s:// plu.az1.qualtri s.com/jfe/form/ vSV 82rV6Br4chqG9V.
