II II I IILHII I II BHiHINiHHmlBIIilHIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlIIII ...... _ .... ~_ _A I] ill iiiimlmlmBllmi ~ " ii OCTOBER 1970 Sale of lots at Riverhill were underway, a new local development planned to attract permanent families rather than summer residents. Booker's Bazaar, used book shop sun by North Mason Friends of the Library, was closed permanently. A four-party camping trip at Belfair State Park was interrupted by the murder of one of the campers, a 33-year-old woman from Florida. One of her traveling companions was arrested on a 2nd degree murder charge. What turned out to be the last Homecoming caravan held by North Mason ran into trouble from beginning to end; two accidents involving caravan cars resulted in over $3,000 in damages and a local youth was arrested on an assault charge for hitting a high school student over the head with a club during the caravan. Joey Johnson, local Boy Scout, received his Eagle rank. An announcement was made by owner Bill Griffith that the Belfair Barn, formerly a cow barn and a well-known dance hall, would be turned into an apartment house. Belfair Pack Rats and sheriff's deputies searched all night for a 62-year-old Japanese man who was lost overnight in the area while hunting mushrooms. He was found early the next morning, wet and cold, but safe. NOVEMBER 1970 A $100,000 bond issue to build a new furehall with "a large room to be used as a community hall" for Belfair Fire District passed with 61 percent approval and was validated by Ken Gilbert, state supervisor of elections, despite numerous complaints about the election. Over 100 persons on North Shore were unable to vote on the issue because not enough ballots were furnished to that precinct; others were kept from voting because out-of-date maps had been furnished election officials and new areas added to the fire district were not shown. Irregularities in Fire District 5, where a bond issue failed, were also noted due to hard-to-read maps which prevented some eligible voters from voting on the issue. The county auditor and prosecutor attended the November meeting of Belfair f'fie commissioners where a large crowd asked questions about the election irregularities. Later in the month a citizen's suit was filed against the auditor and the Belfair fire commissioners to invalidate the election because the issue had passed by only four votes and the outcome could have been different if 129 persons unable to vote when they went to the polls had voted. Christmas trees were being baled by boys at Mission Creek Youth Camp to be sent to servicemen in Vietnam. About 100 Grapeview School District residents turned out for a meeting to learn about an upcoming ballot issue where they would be asked to participate in the funding of a new high school in Shelton. A petition was presented to North Mason School Board asking for reinstatement of the hot lunch program on a self-sustaining basis; the lunch program had been cut due to levy failure in the spring. Two hours of discussion on the subject ensued with the superintendent instructed to take a survey to find out how many would buy lunches at a higher sel f-sustMnAng price. DECEMBER 1970 Belfair Fire District's bond election held in November was declared null and void by Judge Frank E. Baker following a trial in Mason County Superior Court brought about by a citizen's suit. Commissioners of the district said they would resubmit the issue to voters. The judge's decision stated that his opinion was not based on the fact that the outcome could have been different if those deprived of their right to vote had voted; that it was based on the fact that some citizens were barred from their right to vote "and this is a violation of the State constitution." Three citizens involved in the suit, Carol Wentlandt and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Livingston, promised to contact as many voters as possible to make sure the next election didn't fail for hick of enough voters turning out. Delineator lights were installed at Beard's Curve after a campMgn by the Bclfair Chamber of Commerce to have the state highway department do something to cut down the number of accidents there. The chamber was also working to have the main highway in Belfair widened and a left-turn lane installed at the north end of town. 5 Salesmen to Serve You • WATERFRONT e LAKEFRONT • ACREAGE "Lots" to choose from Reid Realty 275-2868 BELFAIR Haul Rock Bulldoze Eill Dirt B&D BULLDOZING CR5-2195 CR5-2113 John & Pat's Tackle Shop OF ALLYN Member of Northwest Steelheaders Cortand Certified Fishing Pro Shop Retail & Wholesale Year-end Sale during December. 25% off on all hunting & fishing supplies except Cortland. ii BONDED LICENSED INSURED JESFIELD CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTING • BUILDING CONCRETE WORK P.O. Rt. 2, Box 947 426-1512 5helton '75 Christmas seals feature children's art Have you noticed something different about this year's Christmas Seals? This year's seals were designed by grade school students throughout the United States. Editor's note: They look like colorful replicas of the ads in the Journal and Herald, drawn by fifth grade students, in this newspaper's annum Christmas issue. The seal representing the State of Washington was pMnted by Carla Erickson, a 7th grade student from Bellevue. Her painting, depicting carolers, was selected from hundreds of entries submitted by students throughout the state to the American Lung Association in December 1973. The seals may look different, but they still carry the same message, according to Melinda Gauley, program associate for the Washington Lung Association• That message is that Christmas Seals lead the fight against all lung diseases. Donations from Christmas Seals continue to provide various services in Mason County. One of these services is the ongoing KICH program (smoking cessation clinics), to help residents of Mason County kick their cigarette habit. The lung association also makes available quit kits for people who want an extra bit of help to quit smoking. Breathing rehabilitation clinics, sponsored by the lung association offer an opportunity for persons with disabling lung disease to live a more comfortable and productive life. If you would like more information on how Christmas Seals work for you, or if you have not already received your Christmas Seals, contact the Washington Lung Association, 3013-B - Sixth Avenue, Tacoma 98406.
