The boys built a good pile of canned goods. Belfair Thriftway added a beautiful turkey to the pile. Some people took the neat approach and dug deeper under the bedcovers. Those due at work had to make do with a cold breakfast. While waiting for the power to come back on, Mr. and Mrs. Terry Haydon and the two youngsters were cozy by moving out to their nearby summer trailer. Les and Wilma Just had to give a raincheck on the promised pancakes for breakfast to their two visiting grandchildren. Double trouble developed later in the day when the oven element sputtered out and left Wilma holding the cookie sheet. The tropical fish at the J. C. Williams home had a low survival rate. The 12 hours without power took a toll in spite of the Williams' fireplace and first aid efforts of wrapping the fish ,tank in towels for warmth. As the power flickered on about noon, I started to put the delayed birthday cake together. Add a guess to what my thoughts were when the power went off again for some hours. The grand finale was our furnace getting into the act, throwing an oil spasm. The top story of the power outage is a hair-raiser in the experience of Gayland Manwiller. As he was driving home from night shift work, he noticed the lack of lights around Mission Lake. Near the public access area he found the why and wherefore when his truck tangled with live wires and a fallen tree in the road. Gayland sat tight inside, and was able to back his pickup out of the debris amid a shower of sparks. Adding to the many problems of the storm was another tree that fell near the Lumley place on Tiger Lake. Cffauncey and Betty Vaughn have reason to be mighty proud parents as their son Todd joined the ranks of successful hunters. After completing the course in firearms safety, 13-year-old Todd Driver cited Brian" C. Hodgen of Belfair was issued a citation for failure to stop for a schoolbus when red fights were flashing on November 1 7. According to the report in the sheriff's office, a description of Hodgen's vehicle had been given to a deputy who spotted it and stopped it. The school bus driver identified Hodgen as the" driver of the vehicle when it had passed the bus. C 8:30 to 5:30 Tues. thru Fri. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat. Getting to the chosen spot involving packing and hiking in some 12 miles. Todd was hunting alone when he sighted an elk. One well-placed shot through the neck downed the 360-1b. animal. With his dad's help, the elk was loaded on pack horses and brought out of the woods. Lost and found things reported to the sheriff appear here and there in this paper, and one in the Nov. 6 issue had a sad ending. It was late at night when Nancy Cleman called, asking about their lost pet that matched with one reported found on North Shore. Nancy said they are new residents at Wooten Lake and the red female Irish setter had probably lost its way in the unfamiliar surroundings. Her grandmother had read my article (bless those readers) and the adjoining article of the lost pet brought about instant phone calls. It was one of those three-day holidays and, with time going by, the dog was taken to the Kitsap Humane Society. Nancy had inquired earlier about her lost dog, but was not notified when an Irish setter was brought in. Records there show that one dog was placed in a new home (no address) and another was put to sleep. Either one could have been the Clemans' lost pet. Memorial services for Florence B. (Mrs. Fred) Maul, 80, of Belfair were held Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton. She died November 15 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 1 8, 1895 in Juneau, Alaska, she came to Bremerton from Seattle in 1932 and has lived on Hood Canal since 1964. Surviving are her husband, Fred, of the family home; a son, Allan of Tacoma; and four grandchildren. Inurnment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
