U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer (D—Gig Harbor) was one
of four lawmakers named as Teddy Roosevelt Cour-
age Award winners earlier this month in Washing-
ton, D.C., by Issue One, a cross-partisan political
reform organization.
Kilmer, who represents Washington’s 6th Con-
gressional District, along with U.S. Sens. James
Lankford (R-Oklahoma) and Amy Klobuchar (D—
Minnesota) and US. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis-
consin), were honored Nov. 13 for efforts to update
the U.S. political system and secure elections.
“Senators James Lankford and Amy Klobu-
char, and Representatives Mike Gallagher and
Derek Kilmer have consistently reached across
the aisle and championed political reform when
Washington is at its most divided,” Issue One
CEO Nick Penniman said in a news release.
“They are working to rebuild public trust in our
great experiment of self-government at a time
when it is cratering.”
A release issued Nov. 19 by his office said Kilm-
er was recognized» for his role as chair of the Select
Committee on the Modernization of Congress, for
his leadership on campaign finance reform and for
working to reduce the role of money in politics. '
“For a long time, folks have been justifiably frus-
trated with the performance of the government.

There’s been too much money, too many special in—
terests, and too little accountability,” Kilmer said in
his release. “I’m working every day to fix that and
ensure Congress takes concrete steps toward creat—
ing a government that works better for the Ameri-
can people.
He added, “I’m honored to receive this award and
I thank Issue One for supporting the ongoing efforts
to modernize Congress and get our government back
on track.”
According to Kilmer’s office’s release, after his ap-
pointment as chair of the congressional moderniza-
tion committee in January, the committee issued 29
recommendations to benefit transparency in govern—
ment; The committee continues to push to improve
how members of Congress communicate and connect
with constituents and got better accessibility for
those with disabilities to the U.S. House of Repre—
sentative s .
Earlier this month, the House voted to extend
the bipartisan committee through the end of 2020 to
continue working to deliver reforms. ’
According to Issue One, the Teddy Roosevelt
Courage Awards honor those who share values with
the 26th president, a defender of ethical government
practices.
