Led by 'Runner of the Year' Dan Paine
Climbers 'All.Area'
Dan Paine was named boys'
"Runner of the Year" and five of
his fellow Highclimbers joined
him in all-area distinction this
past week as the Daily Olympian
revealed its annual greater-Puget-
Sound selections.
Senior ace Paine, a two-time
age-group All-American who just
this past month qualified for his
third straight trip to cross-coun-
try's Junior Olympic nal,ionals,
outpolled Lakes star Seth Bridges
for the area's top prep distinction
in his sport.
In soccer, where the Climbers
fashioned their best record in years
and capped it with a long-awaited
return to the playoffs, Shelton se-
nior Brit Bowman by way of Mary
M. Knight High School in Matlock
earned all-area appointment while
her mentor, Brett Bartlett, copped
"Coach of the Year" distinction.
And in football the Climbers
State champs
roll to 4th win
The Climbers' defending state
champions roared to their fourth
straight win in prep bowling
action last week, drubbing River
Ridge 17-1.
The Climbers improved to
4-0 on the year while the Hawks
dropped to 0-4.
The victors were led by
respective 350 and 345 series by
veteran juniors Alisha Wade and
Danielle Baye.
Climber senior Cammille
Olinger finished the week atop
the league with a 180.8 average
through six games. Teammate and
fellow senior Michelle Robinson
was third, at 176.8.
Also in the top ten for Shelton
were senior Chelsey Stevens at
175.9, Wade at 174.0 and Baye at
166.3.
Olinger topped the high-game
list as well, with a 243. Shelton
bowlers were in iive of the next
six spots, with Wade second at
234, Stevens third at 219, junior
veteran Tracy Yuan fourth at 214,
Robinson fifth at 204 and junior
veteran Morgan Whitney seventh
at 203.

had three seniors make the grade:
recordsetting running back Kyle
Burbridge, who earlier had been
named the Western Cascade Con-
ference "Offensive Player of the
Year;" defensive end Jacob Hanes,
and offensive lineman Jacob
"Niko" Nikolaisen.
PAINE CAPPED A dominant
season by outracing long-time
nemesis Bridges at district and
state alike, finishing seventh over-
all in the latter to join fewer than
a half dozen Climber boys ever
to place in the top ten in the all-
Washington showdown.
Midfielder Bowman, co-MVP of
the league this fall, had 12 goals
and three assists. She scored on a
remarkable 48 percent of'the shots
she took.
Bartlett led Brit & Company to
second place in the conference by
way of a ten-win season - a six-
win improvement in a single year
- and their first district tourna-
ment berth in school history.
BURBRIDGE BROKE both
single-game and season rush-
ing records for the Highclimbers
this fall, amassing 330 against
state-ranked and unbeaten North
Thurston in the fifth game of the
season and finishing with 1,653
yards and 23 touchdowns on the
year as the Climbers finished sec-
ond in league and made it to the
first round of the state playoffs.
The 5-8, 170-pounder's TD count
represents a new single-season
standard at Climberville as well,
by the way.
Star wrestler Nikolaisen was a
key component in Burbridge's suc-
cess, anchoring the offensive line
that helped him on his recordset-
ting way and allowing nary a soli-
tary quarterback sack all season.
And Hanes, a state finalist in
track's discus and shotput events
as well, made 42 primary tackles,
assisted on seven others, regis-
tered three quarterback sacks and
had five other tackles for loss of
yardage, had ten quarterback hur-
ries, caused three fumbles, blocked
a kick and successfully defended
against a pass.
GETTING THEIR VARIOUS game faces on prior to the
start last week are ET Trotters (from left, near) Maleah
Walsh and Mackenzie Cunningham.
