Highclimber Happenings:
SAD D goes into overdrive
By KELSY HOPKINS the office and the Student Union 2005 and 2006; the district count-
For the SADD club's 26th birth-
day, the SHS Students Against
Destructive Decisions kicked off
SADD club week on Monday,
marking their ongoing efforts to
prevent drunk driving in Mason
County. Skills USA, an SHS lead-
ership club connected to career
and technical skills, launched
the Use Another Word campaign
on the same day and has already
enlisted the help of SADD club
and Key Club members as well as
hundreds of students in helping
the campus become a safer and
more positive learning environ-
ment.
At lunch on Monday and
Wednesday, SHS students got
the chance to pick up a red ribbon
and sign their own contract for
life, pledging to be drug- and al-
cohol-free and to refuse to get in a
car with a driver who is under the
influence of drugs or alcohol. To
better understand how the use of
illegal substances impairs vision,
some students took up the SADD
club's offer and volunteered to
drive a golf cart through an ob-
stacle course while wearing thtal
vision glasses, which produce a
distorted image of the wearer's
surroundings. The presentation
will continue on Friday between
Building, near the display of a
car that was wrecked by a drunk
driver.
After school on Thursday,
SADD club members will be pass-
ing out candy to all SHS students
who have their seatbelts on and a
red ribbon on their car's antenna.
In addition, students are encour-
aged to wear red on Friday and
join the youth rally after school,
when both junior-high and high-
school SADD club members will
be discouraging alcohol and to-
bacco use from their station at. the
corner of Wallace Kneeland Bou-
levard and Shelton Springs Road.
Next to this week's SADD club
display at lunches, Skills USA
members are passing out: wrist-
bands and pledges fi)r their own
schoolwide service project. Origi-
nally inspired by students who
were bothered by the abusive lan-
guage at Springfield High School
in Oregon, the Use Another Word
campaign relies on students who
will pledge to take a stand when-
ever their peers use language that
is racist, sexist, inflammatory,
homophobic, or oflhnsive and de-
rogatory to anyone on the school
campus.
At Springfield, the campaign
led to dramatic change between
ed 48 fewer suspensions ['or fight-
ing and 165 fewer suspensions
for defiance. Skills USA members
and other Shelton Itigh School
students are now doing their part
to reduce disrespect, discrimina-
tion and aggravation by choosing
another word.
Grange will honor
service on Sunday
Mason County subordinate
granges will present awards for
Granger of the Year and Commu-
nity Member of the Year starting
at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the Agate
Grange.
The program is sponsored by
Pomona Grange, a legislative
branch of the organization that
coordinates countywide activi-
ties. Members will provide a light
lunch. Persons not members of
the Grange who are interested in
learning more about the Grange
program and what it has to offer
are welcome.
Subordinate granges located in
Agate, Skokomish, Harstine, Mat-
lock and Belfair have nominated
award recipients in each of their
communities. Granger of the Year
is traditionally given to a per-
son who has contributed to their
Grange program as well as local
and community events. The per-
son must be a Grange member.
A person, couple or an organiza-
tion is eligible for the Community
Member of the Year award. That
award is given to non-members
working to improve or provide a
valuable service to the commu-
nity.
Recipients of the awards will
be announced at the holiday party
and program on December 2.
