Ethelwyn Rae (Gourley) Hoffman
May 21, 1938 to November 12, 2023
Ethelwyn Rae (Gourley) Hoffman, Wyn
to those who knew her, passed peacefully
on Sunday, November 12, 2023. She was
a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and
friend to many.
Wyn was born in Tacoma, WA to Dr.
James and Edith Gourley. She was preceded
in death by her beloved husband Ted
Hoffman, her son, Forrest Hoffman, both
her parents, and her brother, Jim Gourley.
Wyn is survived by her daughters: Krysia
Shorten (husband, Glenn Shorten) and
Allison Nelson (husband, Gary Nelson)
and by her grandchildren; Daniel Huff,
Cody Maheu and Caysie Huff.
Wyn grew up in Tacoma, WA. She
attended Clover Park High School,
graduated in 1956 and then went on to
the University of Washington, where she
graduated with a Master’s degree in Marine Biology in 1962. She met her
beloved
husband, Theodore (Ted) Hoffman in class at the UW. She was a staunch
Huskies
fan.
Wyn married Ted on June 18, 1960, after which they finished their Masters
at
University of WA. She and Ted lived in Juneau, Alaska for a couple of
years, where
their two daughters were born, during which time they built the house at
Mason
Lake. She and Ted moved back to WA to the house at Mason Lake in early
1966.
Later, she and Ted adopted a son, Forrest Hoffman in 1968.
After the loss of her husband, Ted Hoffman, she went to work for 1TT
Rayonier in
Shelton WA. She worked at the Marine Lab on Hood Canal as a Marine
Biologist.
When ITT Rayonier closed the Marine Lab, Wyn went to work for the
Washington
State Department of Ecology. She remained there until she retired in 2008.
She was called Grandma Wyn by many kids who came to enjoy the lake with her
children and grandchildren. Her cookie jar was known to always have
homemade
cookies in it.
Wyn loved to row her rowing shell on Mason Lake. It was her happy place,
and she
would row as many days a year as the weather would allow.
Wyn was an animal lover. She loved her dog Winston and her miniature
Mediterranean Burro, Oliver.
This amazing, fiercely independent lady will be sorely missed by her
family and
friends. In lieu of flowers, we would invite you to donate to
Adopt—A—Pet in Shelton,
WA in her name.
A Celebration of1.ife is planned for some time in 2024. Date is yet to be
determined.
Terry Lee Harkins, 74, died unexpectedly
November 9, 2023, at Summit Pacific
Medical Center. He was born January 6,
1949 in Walla Walla, WA to Claud and
Yvonne P. (Hatley) Harkins.
Terry graduated from Mary M. Knight
High School, Class of 1967. Following
graduation, he worked at Simpson Timber
Company before joining the US. Air Force
and serving during the Vietnam War.
After he left the Air Force Terry returned
to Shelton and married Theresa Iversen
in 1975. 'lhey resided in Shelton and he
retired from Simpson after 45 years.
Terry was an avid hunter and was out
chasing elk the day he passed. He loved
staying active and hardly ever sat still. He
loved to brag about outshiking the younger
guys and gals. He lived life to the fullest
‘ always willing to help anyone in need. If you ever needed something,
all you had to
do was ask Terry. He loved to find and collect all sorts of old stuff.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gary Harkins,
nephew,
Gerald Harkins, and his wife Theresa (Iversen) Harkins,
He is survived by his son, Richard Harkins of Shelton, daughter, Diane
Huisingh
and her husband Richard of Shelton, two grandchildren, Jordyn and Cameron
Huisingh of Shelton, one brother, Larry Harkins and his wife Audrey of
Shelton, also
many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held December 30, 2023 at 11:00 am. at New Hope
Assembly in Shelton.

Edith Borgny Nygard JaQues
Edith Borgny Nygard Jaques, 88, passed
away quietly in her sleep on the evening of
November 13th, 2023.
Edith, or “Borgny” as she was
affectionately known in Shelton, was born
on September 22, 1935 to Ivar Kornelius
Nygard and Solveig Emilie (Kjorslevik) on
the small island of Rugsund in the Nordfiord
on the west coast of Norway. She was one of
ten children. She had two brothers, Egil and
Jan, and seven sisters: Gudrun, Anny, Else,
Ingrid, Lilly, Signe and Magny.
Borgny loved children, especially babies.
After basic schooling, she started nursing
school and afterwards attended midwifery
school in Bergen. She graduated as a
midwife in September 1961. Borgny moved
to Sauda in 1962 and in 1965 she travelled
to South Africa as a missionary with the
Norwegian Mission Society working at
Ekombe Mission Hospital in Zululand Province for 5 years. She travelled
back to
Norway in 1971 and in July of 1972 she immigrated to Canada. In April of
1977
she married Dr. Norman Jaques in New Westminster, British Columbia. He had
two
children, Guy and Hilary so Borgny married into a ready-made family and
enjoyed
being a mother. They moved shortly after to Shelton, WA.
Borgny became a very active member of Faith Lutheran Church where she
contributed her talents in a variety of ways including quilting, making
book bags
for children, singing in the choir, and making her famous lefse. Borgny
made many
friends and cherished her friendships throughout her life. She was an
expert knitter
and was known for making many intricate Norwegian designs. Borgny had a
deep
faith in God and the Faith Lutheran Church was her second family.
She is survived by her son Guy Jaques (Melissa), daughter Hilary Stenstream
(Dan),
sister Gudrun Hoydal, sister Magny Nygiird, and numerous dearly loved
nieces and
nephews in Norway. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: David
and Emma
Jaques and Andrew and Anna Stenstream.
Her memorial service was held at Faith Lutheran Church on November 17th,
2023.

Kenneth F. Maxwell
Kenneth F. Maxwell was born on
December 11, 1937, in Seattle, Washington,
at Harborview Medical Center to Edna Ann
Thompson and Marvin Ronald Maxwell.
He grew up on his family homestead,
which was established well before 1899,
where he was raised on a dairy farm near
his grandparents orchard off the Maxwell
Road in Maple Valley, Washington.
Ken passed away peacefully in Shelton,
WA on October 18, 2023. He was 85 years
old.
He graduated from T ahoma High School
in 1956. He married Flora (Vanderford)
Larson in 1959 and they had two children.
He is survived by his two children, Annette
(Maxwell) Johansen and Kevin Maxwell
(Karen), two grandsons, a great—grandson,
cousins, nieces, and nephews. /
Ken worked for the Boeing Company for
almost 30 years'and retired in 1995. He purchased his Shelton property
in 1997 and
designed and built his home on Little Nahwatzel Drive. He was always busy
working
on projects, whether it was home improvements and maintenance, workng in
his
yard, or working on his vehicles. He was a very creative, resourceful,
immaculate and
organized person.
Some of Ken’s favorite past times included dancing, hiking, R.V.
traveling, and
camping. He enjoyed collecting old coins, fishing, gardening, berry and
mushroom
picking, canning, baking, watching wildlife and generally being in the
great outdoors.
He was a fan of the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners, and loved to watch
auto racing
and driving fast cars. He also restoredrold classic vehicles.
Ken will be dearly missed by his friends and family.
