rebounds in the intrasquad game,
won 95-72 by the favored blacks,
and also scored 23 points.
"He's very clever offensively,"
added Gregg.
With his wings and reach
restricted until last week by a
harness rig he'd worn since
breaking his collarbone during
football, John Vernon had little
opportunity to develop his
shooting touch, but the 6-0 senior
showed good floor sense and
gatfiered in seven rebounds in the
intrasquad tilt.
Senior guard Dodge Kerr was
hitting on all eight cylinders in
the contest, tying for game
honors in the assist category with
five.
Seniors Randy Bostrom and
Dale Campagna, mainstays of last
year's Climber team which
finished seventh at State,
established themselves as the
guard combination to beat.
DALE CAMPAGNA pops a jump shot over the guard of
Roger Ayers last week in the Highclimbers' intrasquad game.
Bostrom hit on 13 of 22 attempts
from the field for 26 points while
floor leader Campagna had five
assists and as many steals and hit
50 percent en route to a 15-point
performance.
"We'll depend on them for
leadership and poise," said Gregg
of the duo. "As a combination, I
can't see Irading them for any
guard combination in the league."
Perhaps the most pleasant
surprise last week was the play of
junior Chris McGee. Hampered
most of practice by a slowly
responding knee injury incurred
during football season, McGee
scored 30 points and had 12
rebounds - both high for the
game. Calling him possibly his
best pure basketball player on the
team, Gregg expressed confidence
that McGee will be seeing a good
deal of action this year.
Another sophomore, forward
Dave Sutton, lived up to Gregg's
early confidence in him and
earned a shot at starting
tomorrow. Sutton scored 14
points and played a particularly
aggressive game under the boards,
grabbing eight rebounds.
Dan Fitchitt, 6-5 and another
talented junior, had a rough
evening against the more
experienced Kaszycki, but Gregg
speaks very highly of the younger
center's native ability, saying he
has the potential to develop into
one of the best in the league. His
scoring punch blunted until the
late goings, when he got most of
his eight points, Fitchitt
nevertheless used his cannon-like
throwing ann well, getting credit
for four assists.
Guards Roger Ayers, Dale
Johnson and Pete Francis also
earned praise from the coach.
Ayers led the white team guards
in scoring with 14, while Johnson
and Francis had six and eight,
respectively. Ayers and Johnson
are juniors while Francis is in his
last year.
In assessing his team's chances
against its strong opponent from
Olympia, Gregg conceded the
edge in experience to the host
team. "It will take some real
aggressive play by our inside guys
- none of whom have had any
real varsity experience as yet," he
said. "But I look forward to
playing a good team early in the
season. It'll be a good test for us."
Gregg is not about to concede
anything else, though. "We'll just
go out and play our game," he
said. "And if we play the way we
can play, the outcome will take
care of itself."
Game time tomorrow is 8
p.m., with the jayvee game at 6.
Season tickets are still being sold
by Jim Willis, athletic director, at
the high school office.
