Canoe Vacation George and Karen Bowen and girls, Cindy and Allison, along with family dog, Zip, took a canoeing vacation in eastern Washington. They canoed by day and camped out nights on the Potholes Reservoir south of Moses Lake where they enjoyed dry, sunny weather. During their week's vacation they also visited friends in the Tri-Cities and canoed on the Columbia River. Continuing on the way they visited with the Lynn Card family in their new home at Orofino, Idaho. Calvin Ching of Hoodsport was also visiting with the Cards over the Thanksgiving holiday. Enroute home Karen and George went up to their old campus at Pullman. They met up with the snow in Ellensburg from where it was a weary nine-hour trip back to Hoodsport. Over the mountains they passed snow plows tipped over in the ditch, along with many abandoned trucks and cars buried in the snow. New Frontier Three local boys are back home after a two-month stay on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Mark Walmsley, Mike Lindgren and Glen Ferrier drove to Prince Rupert and took a freighter across to Graham Island where they set up home for two months of pioneer life. On the island the boys drove 16 miles out of Masset to the road's end from where they traveled by foot to an abandoned homestead eight miles up the beach. Here they found a two-story log cabin built in 1914. With a few minor repairs and the addition of a heating stove, they set up house and home. Located only two hundred yards from the ocean on the northeast point of the island, they had a spectacular view of the evening sunsets and seagoing craft. Wildlife was plentiful, but the closest neighbors were a seven-mile walk down the beach. They did have one houseguest, a mouse, who was described as either very lazy or didn't care to take advantage of his hosts. Native cutthroat fishing was fantastic with most fish averaging 16 to 18 inches. They caught one whopper that measured 21 inches and went a good three pounds. A raven also had one real good day of fishing, swiping the boys' catch from behind their backs. However, the boys did get two deer to help supplement their diet. Via their Zodiak inflatable boat the boys traveled the channel between the islands, seeing many of the sights. At the Haida Indian village they saw a half-dozen large totem poles being carved. At another abandoned Indian village were many weathered totems and a long house. Back in town at Masset was the only place to purchase supplies. Glen's brother, Mike Ferrier, his wife and children, make their home there so shopping day was enlightened with a visit with the Ferriers and the many other friends they made on the island. The return trip home was made by freighter back across to Prince Rupert, then by ferry to Kelsey Bay on Vancouver Island and another ferry trip back to the states. They returned with many agates and abalone shells gathered along the beach, a few glass balls and wooded floats, and a desire to return to the islands.
