The Squaxin Island Indian
Tribe has received a $30,000
grant from the federal
government to start construction
of an historic recreation of a
tribal long house on the Mason
County Fairgrounds.
One of 98 bicentennial
projects around the country
selected to benefit from the
government's $14 million
job-impact program, the long
house will serve as a museum for
the display of tribal artifacts and
handiwork resulting from the
tribe's summer programs.
According to tribal
coordinator Sally Norman, the
federal grant assures the project's
getting underway early this spring
to permit a July 4 completion,
but supplementary funds from
tribal sources are expected to be
required.
A long house is a communal
home or council hall. It was used
chiefly by the Iroquois and
several other tribes, Squaxin
Island among them. The Mason
County museum, whose
dimensions have not been
determined as yet, will be
constructed of cedar and fir "and
will be as close to tradition as
possible," said Norman.
