Harstine Island: Rain doesn't dampen Santa's spiri By JOHN COOPER The colder, rainy weather on Sunday afternoon reduced atten- dance a bit at the matinee pertbr- mance of the Harstine Island The- atre Club's Christmas play, Santa Goes on Strike, but the cast played to full houses on Friday and Satur- day stagings of the play written by Robert A. Mauro and Bob Helm. Lorna Hink established herself as a fine director and led the cast to the production of a success- ful and enjoyable entertainment which audiences found "very good" and "most enjoyable." Bjorn Cofield, one of the youth- ful thespians who has literally grown up in theatre club produc- tions, starred as Santa. It is re- ported that he did a masterful job and handled the many lines of dia- log very nicely. Betty Helm, a veteran peribrm- er, familiar to the role, portrayed Mrs. Claus in her usual competent way. North Pole residents, Tinker, Katrinka, Winker and Bixby were played by Bennett Morrison, Ellen Morrison, Grace Phelan and Ry- der Phelan. In elvin fashion they brightened the show. BECAUSE SANTA decided to go on strike, media attention became focused on the situation and before the tale reached a con- clusion a crowd showed up at the scene of the action: TV newscaster, Barbara Hubbard; a camera per- son, Trinity Creed; four reporters, Dianne Myers, Barbara Morrison, John Ramsey and Eleanor Clark; and a small girl, Josie Beaudoin. Audience response affirmed that everyone just did a great job. A contingent of four of Santa's reindeer added to the lively ac- tion. Under the antlers were Carter Laes, Cassidee Creed, Guy Beaudoin and Raney Baker. Singers Whickey Conway Larson, Heather Sawyer, Monica Sawyer, Tara Ramsey and Gerri Lewis con- tributed melodic moments while Craig Rakhshani used his guitar skillfully. The A Cappella Belles, always in demand at this season of the year, delivered several num- bers in close harmony. Stage assembly fbr the show was handled by Fred Burgdorf, Bob Helm, Gary Hink and Craig Rakhshani. Lights and sound were handled by l)oreen Phelan and Mike Plomski. Karla Lortz produced the programs and pub- licity fell to the lot of Lorna Hink and John Cooper. Fred Burgdorf served as stage manager for the production, Whickey Conway Larson paint- aMMoret by Blaine & Linda Flaclagcr Sh¢lton GETTING UNDERFOOT The time and consideration given to purchasing carpeting is well spent because it covers a large area, lasts a dozen years or more, and represents a significant invest- ment. Carpeting accounts for 75 percent of all floor covering selections for new homes in the U.S. today and is, as well, the floor covering of choice for remodeling projects. One of the primary factors to take into cork sideration when selecting carpeting is func- tion. If the area intended to be carpeted is formal, a smooth, stleared low-pile velvet might well look and feel best. In high-activ- ity living areas, a durable, level4oop berber with a rugged appearance may be the best bet. And, if a carpet is needed to run up a stairway or through a hall, consideration may be given to upgrading the quality of the carpet and padding intended for place- ment in these areas to guarantee maximum wear. Garby Elmore was in charge of costumes. Eleanor Clark, Floyd Sawyer and Bob Clar rode herd on props while Dianne Ramsey served as prompter. IT WAS A GREAT event to get the last month of the year under way and so here we are, already almost a week knee-deep in De- cember. Believe it or not, there are just 25 days left in 2007. As far as daylight goes, it just doesn't go far enough. The bright hours of the days of December, often glazed over with gray, are the shortest of all the yearly 365. In fact, the shortest daylight span in the day's 24 hours is only about two week's away when the first official day of winter rolls around on Saturday, December 22. Today is December 6. It is good to know what historical events took place that began to shape the country in which we live today. One of these events occurred on December 6, 1790. The U.S. Con- gress moved from New York City to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ten years later Congress moved again to the District of Columbia, a site chosen by George Wash- ington, and was well established there by December 6, 1884 when the Washington Monument, one of the wonders of the 19th Century, was completed. Harstine Island would still be here geographically today, but life might well be differ- ent if our nation and government had not been created and devel- oped in its early fbrmative years. There is much of our contempo- rary culture that stems from much earlier days. A reminder of that is that the death of Saint Nicho- las occurred on December 6, 343. Nick was the benevolent bishop from Myra, Turkey, and the origi- nal Santa Claus. Several centu- ries went by after his demise, then just two days before Christmas an anonymous poem, "The Night Before Christmas or A Visit From Saint Nicholas" was published in The New York Sentinel. The poem became popular and the descrip- tions in it provided a mental pic- ture of the plump gentleman, his attire and behavior. In no time at all artists and illustrators created the beaming, red-suited Santa. Clement Clarke Moore, 1844 finally admitted of the poem, certainly life, in living color as it very prominent figure of this1 of year. Saint Nick has been many places and heard many Yuletide songs.
