Barbara Giles Barbara "Barbie" Mi- chele Giles, 30, a Shelton resident, died Nov. 24, 2012, in Olympia. She was born Nov. 18, 1982, in Shelton to Barbara Lyon and Randy Giles. She enjoyed quad rid- ing, mud- ding and raising her four children, whose activities included 4-H, scout- ing, horses Barbara and cheer. Giles She was involved with Brownie and Girl Scouts, baseball and soccer. She is survived by mother Barbara Lyon of Shelton; father Randy Giles of Shelton; grandmother Lois Perry of Shelton; sons Dakota and Chad of Shel- ton; daughters Brianna and Chevelle of Shelton; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Hettie Rodgers Hettie Irene Rodgers, 80, died Nov. 22, 2012, with her family gathered by her bedside at SEARHC-Mt. Hospital in Sitka, Alaska. Born on April 7, 1932, to Dwight H. and Lois L. (Al- len) Pierce in Aberdeen, Het- tie was raised in Hoodsport and attended Irene S. Reed High School in Shelton. She married her high school sweetheart, Darrel Rodgers, on July 23, 1949. In 1960, Hettie and Dar- rel moved their family to Sitka. Hettie worked and played side-by-side with her hus- band fishing their troller, the F/V Cheri-D, living for a few years in Clear Creek Log- ging Camp at Rodman Bay, hunting and enjoying the outdoors, and later traveling in the winter months in their RV. She was a volunteer at the White Elephant for the past 20 years and also was a member of the Sitka Em- blem Club No. 142. Writing was her passion, her family said. Her stories were published in 1962, 1964 and 1968 in the Alas- ka Sportsman Magazine. One story recounted the ill- fated Yakatat moose hunt- ing trip by husband Darrel, Barton Sollars, Marvin Kin- berg Jr., Lauren Loucks, Odie Hethcock and Larry Marler on Sollars' boat, F/V Bertha R. At the end of the hunt, the Bertha R was Crossing the Ahrnklin River bar, heavily loaded with meat in the hold, when a rogue wave swept over and swamped the 40-foot fishing boat. Her story describes not only the hunt, but the ordeal the men experienced in their survival and the salvaging of the Bertha R. After the death of her husband in 1990, Hettie met William "Bill" Konoske. They were companions un- til his death in 2005. Hettie is survived by son Randal (Jan) Rodgers; daughter Rene Rodgers; 11 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; twin great- great-granddaughters; and brother Dwight Lee Pierce. She was preceded in death by husband Darrel and daughter Cheryl Lee Rodgers. A memorial will be in spring 2013 in Shelton, where she will be buried beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family sug- gests donations be made in her honor to the White Elephant Shop in Sitka, Alaska, 99835. James Rogers James Linnell Rogers, 76, a resident of Shelton, died Dec. 1, 2012, in Lacey. He was born Jan. 17, 1936, to Reuben and Nettie (Woods) Rogers in Vernon, Texas. He served in the Army from 1955-58 and in the Navy from 1961-66. He was a Petty Officer 2nd Class (ETNZ) E-5 on discharge. He was an electronic tech- nician, and he enjoyed at- tending church, gardening, fishing, football and family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rose; son Paul (Tara Brickell); daughters Lori (Joe Skewis) and Karen Klokstad; grand- children Nathan Skewis, Nicole Hayes and Chris- topher Hayes; and great- grandchildren Devin Long and Sophie Hayes. A service will take place at i p.m. on Saturday at Bethel Assembly of God, 1521 Monroe St., Shelton. It will be officiated by Pastor Josd Delgado. Arrangements are by Forest Funeral Home of Shelton. Memorial dona- tions can be made to Bethel Assembly of God. Elsie Jones Elsie Florence Jones, 91, died Nov. 28, 2012, at home in Shelton. She was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Bremerton to Al- exander and Dora Bella (Mitchell) Thomson. She graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle, and married Rich- ard Jones in Seattle in the early 1940s. She was a waitress. Her family shared that she loved people, art, animals, trailer traveling with her husband, and gardening. She is survived by neph- ews Wyatt Tonkin and Lance "Bud" Tonkin of Se- attle; great-nephews Shea Tonkin of Seattle and Tyler Tonkin of Oklahoma City, Okla. She was preceded in death by husband Richard Jones; parents Alexander and Dora Thomson; brother Gordon Thomson; and sis- ter Beverly Tonkin. Peggy Linder (Ewart) Peggy Linder (Ewart), 57, a resident of Tumwa- ter, died Nov. 10, 2012, at home. She was born Oct. 22, 1956, in Mountain Home, Idaho. She married Randy Linder on June ~3, 1975, in Shelton. She was a self-employed musician and classic rock drummer. Her interests included her family. She is survived by husband Randy Linder of Tumwater; sons Jesse Linder and Jason Linder of Tumwater; grandson Hayes Linder of Olympia; brothers Dan Ewart of Allyn, Roger Ewart of Grapeview and John Ewart of Purdy; and sister Nanci Bridges / Ew- art of Marysville. Memorial donations can be made to the Peggy Linder Memorial Fund at Bank of America. Shirley Weaver Shirley Mac Weaver, 89, a resident of Shelton, died Nov. 28, 2012, at home. She was born Sept. 13, 1923, to Truman and Nellie Tough in Lansing, Minn. She married Fred Weav- er on Feb. 11, 1954, in Shel- ton. After graduating high school, she went to work for the Boe- ing Co. as a riveter. She even- tually took leave from her work to take care of her ailing fa- Shirley ther. Shir- Weaver ley and her late husband enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer and grew a large garden, which they shared with their neighbors and friends. She enjoyed canning, knitting, crocheting, bowl- ing, fishing and camping. Her family shared that she was a great cook and was known for her homemade pie crust. She loved the Christmas season, with all the lights and festivities and especially loved spend- ing time with her son, grandsons, great-grand- daughter and Chihuahua PeeWee. Whalen Sr., 95, a resident of Belfair, died Nov. 26, 2012, at the Haven in Allyn. He was born Aug. 22, 1917, to Edward J. and Isa- belle J. (Grower) Whalen in Princeton, Ill. His family moved to Hutchinson, Kan., when he was young. At 18, he went to Cali- fornia to become a logger in the redwoods. He found that work was scarce, so he went to Southern Califor- nia. In 1936, he joined the Marine ~Corps, and served for four years. He was discharged as a pri- vate first class in 1940 and John went to Whalen work for Pan Amer- ican World Airlines, using his com- munication education he received as a member of the Marine Corps. He worked as a chief radio operator / navigator aboard a Douglas DC-3. At that time, Pan Am had a contract with the Navy to ferry personnel and supplies to bases in Alaska. According to his family, Jack's 15 minutes of fame came when, during an ice storm over Prince William Sound and with no visibility and low on fuel, he found a radio sig- nal from a Navy weather station and had the pilot follow the signal to a beach landing that saved all pas- sengers on board. Jack met and married the love of his life, Mary Eleanor, in Seattle. They were married for 67 years. They had four children, Mary Jane, Kathleen (Ka- tie), Virginia (Ginny), and John Jr. After the war, Pan Am lost its contract with the Navy, and Jack went to work for Boeing Co., work- ing his way up to electrical engineer. He retired after 30 years with the company and moved to his retire- ment home in Belfair on Hood Canal in 1979. Jack found that Mason County PUb 3 needed a commissioner, so he ran for the office and was a com- missioner for 25 years. He retired again at 92 in 2009. He is survived by daughter Mary Hollen of Greenbank; son John Jr. of Belfair; grandchildren Tim O'Mahony of Port Orchard, Molly O'Mahony of Seattle, Pattie Quinn of Coupeville, Syrie Bars- ness of Cheney and James (Jim) Hollen of Nyssa; 13 great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter Rosie. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary and daughters Katie and Ginny. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Dec. 14 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church at 1171 N.E. Sand Hill Road in Belfair. (360) 943-6363 Harry "Bud" Clay Hays Jr. Harry "Bud" Clay Hays Jr., 86, died Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Alpine Way Retirement Apartments in Shelton. He was born on November 29, 1926 in Touchet, WA to Harry C. and Maude Luella (Myers) Hays Sr. Bad graduated from Naches High School in 1943 and on September 15, 1946 he married Geraldine Baldwin in Yakima, WA. From the ages of 10 years old to 17 years old Bud worked in the fruit orchards, fields, fruit warehouses, fruit stands and farms in the Naches, WA area. He was regional sales manager for the Richfield Oil Company from 1946 to the early 1950's. From the late 1950's to the early 1960's he worked for the Bellevue American newspaper and then owned and operated the Lilliwaup Store and Station with his wife from 1964 to 1976. Bud then worked for the Mason County Sheriff's Department from the mid 1960's until 1983 as an under-sheriff and then at the Mason County Jail from 1983 to 1986. He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling and gardening. Bud also enjoyed the company of young people. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Hays in 1998; parents, Harry and Maude Luella Hays Sr.; sister, Betty Fulkner; and niece, Lynne Erickson. Bud is survived by his sons, John Clay Hays (Torchy) of Olympia, WA, Michael Charles Hays (Petey) of Riverside, CA, James Richard Hays (Lois) of Shelton, WA; daughter, Janice Faye Massoncini of Lilliwaup, WA; nine grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
