John Whalen
John H. Whalen Sr., 95,

in Allyn.
He was born Aug. 22,
1917, to Edward J. and Isa-
belle J. (Grower) Whalen in
Princeton, Ill.
His family moved to
Hutchinson, Kan., when he
was young.
At 18, he went to Cali-
fornia to become a logger
in the redwoods. He found
that work was scarce, so he
went to Southern Califor-
nia. In 1936, he joined the
Marine
~Corps, and
served for
four years.
He was
discharged
as a pri-
vate first
class in
1940 and

Whalen work for
Pan Amer-
ican World
Airlines, using his com-

received as a member of the
Marine Corps. He worked
as a chief radio operator /
navigator aboard a Douglas
DC-3.
At that time, Pan Am
had a contract with the
Navy to ferry personnel
and supplies to bases in
Alaska. According to his
family, Jack's 15 minutes
of fame came when, during
an ice storm over Prince
William Sound and with
no visibility and low on
fuel, he found a radio sig-
nal from a Navy weather
station and had the pilot
follow the signal to a beach
landing that saved all pas-
sengers on board.
Jack met and married
the love of his life, Mary
Eleanor, in Seattle. They
were married for 67 years.
They had four children,
Mary Jane, Kathleen (Ka-
tie), Virginia (Ginny), and
John Jr. After the war, Pan
Am lost its contract with
the Navy, and Jack went to
work for Boeing Co., work-
ing his way up to electrical
engineer. He retired after
30 years with the company
and moved to his retire-
ment home in Belfair on
Hood Canal in 1979.
Jack found that Mason
County PUb 3 needed a
commissioner, so he ran for
the office and was a com-
missioner for 25 years. He
retired again at 92 in 2009.
He is survived by
daughter Mary Hollen of
Greenbank; son John Jr.
of Belfair; grandchildren
Tim O'Mahony of Port
Orchard, Molly O'Mahony
of Seattle, Pattie Quinn
of Coupeville, Syrie Bars-
ness of Cheney and James
(Jim) Hollen of Nyssa; 13

great-great-granddaughter
Rosie.
He was preceded in
death by his wife Mary and
daughters Katie and Ginny.
A funeral Mass will be at
11 a.m. on Dec. 14 at Prince
of Peace Catholic Church at
