Two activities take up most of Shel-
ton High School senior J.D. Clemons'
time -- swimming and FFA.
This is Clemons' fourth year on Shel-
ton's swim team, where he competes in
the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard
individual medley.
'~When I was in the
eighth grade, I took
(co-head coach Chad)
Youngquist's swim
class and he told me I
should try out for the
team," Clemons said.
"I was in his class
again the next year
and he said I should
try out again, so I did
J.D. and I liked it."
Clemons Clemons said he
likes the whole team
and how it's like a big
family.
"I've played other sports where peo-
ple are out for themselves, but it's not
like that," he said. "I love racing (and)
beating the person I was just next to. I
love all of it."
Clemons played football through his
sophomore year and baseball through
his freshman year, but swimming is the
only sport he's participated in the last
two years.
............. "i-Jo-ve-racin-g .............
(and) beating the
person I was just
next to."
He said swimming at the college
level would be "really cool," but that he
hasn't thought about it much.
At SHS, Clemons has between a 3.4
and 3.5 GPA, earning mostly As so far
this semester.
"I plan on going to South Puget
Sound Community College for two
years and then transferring to hopefully
Washington State University or Central
Washington University," Clemons said.
"I like WSU better."
He said he likes WSU more than
CWU because he's been there and he
loved the atmosphere of the school.
"I've talked to representatives from
WSU and they offer what I want to
study," Clemons said. "I love how it's just
a school and then nothing but fields."
In college, Clemons said he plans to
study criminology, sociology and ecol-
ogy.
"I'm also interested in agriculture,"
he said. "I'm in FFA and I'm the vice
president. I just joined last year, and on
the second day in, I did a competition
called sales-ag."
He said he enjoys being in the Shelton
chapter of FFA because the competitions
build speaking and leadership skills.
"I also show animals," Clemons said.
"I went to the Puyallup Fair and showed
two cows. That was fun."
He said Youngquist also encouraged
him to join leadership.
"He's my favorite teacher and my
mentor," Clemons said. "He's a really
awesome coach."
When he's not swimming for the
Highclimbers or competing with FFA,
Clemons said he's hanging out with his
friends or fishing.
"I also like to go to this gymnastics
place in Olympia (Alley Oop) with the
divers," he said. "It's a lot of fun."

The Shelton girls' basketball team
had a rough start to its season last
week.
The team's season opener at Black
Hills on Nov. 28 was a 67-14 loss.
"We played well for the first quar-
ter and were able to get Black Hills
to turn the ball over," head coach
Aaron Leth said. "We also were able
to fast break against them."
He said the team's downfall was
that they gave up too much on size.
"Black Hills had seven girls tall-
er than our tallest girl (junior post
Kassy Slone and sophomore guard
Kiana Garberich-Wily at 5-foot-9),"
Leth said. "It made it hard to run our
half court traps. We were successful
in trapping the ball, but with their
height, they just threw over us all
night."
Junior guard/post Cheyenne

scorer for the night with five. Four

"Saturday's game against Capital
brought a lot more intensity and I
was happy with the way we played
defense," Leth said. "They were able
to capitalize on a couple of rotations
that were not made in our zone."
He said the team has implement-
ed three sets of zone defenses this
year and two in the last two days.
