The Shelton wrestling team's effort at
the John Birbeck Classic Tournament
boosted it to a seventh-place finish Satur-
day.
"At Timberline, our lower weight classes
were really impressive," head coach Chris
Lacy said. "Each of our wrestlers in the
lower-weight classes performed at a high
level and showed a lot of improvement."
The Highclimbers finished with 81.5
points. Decatur won the tournament with
177 points, followed by Prairie with 120,
Timberline with 113, Shorewood with
109.5, W.F. West Chehalis with 98 and
Central Kitsap with 92.5. Shelton finished
ahead of Olympia with 80.5 points, River
Ridge with 79.5, Skyview with 77.5, North
Thurston with 53.5, Gig Harbor with 52,
Bremerton with 37.5, Bellevue with 36,
Sequim with 11 and Capital with three

match and earned a flu'st-period fall."
Due to the format of the tournament,
wrestlers who reached the bout for third
place did not wrestle for third. For some
wrestlers, this would have meant having
more than five matches in a single tourna-
ment, which is against the rules. There-
fore, each third-place finish was a tie.
Shelton had several wrestlers finish in
third place.
At 113, sophomore Caleb Williams-
Ragsdale started the day with a bye round.
He then pinned North Thurston's Kaydin
Alabbas in 2:38 before losing to Timber-
line's Isis Wadleigh with a 5:16 pin. In the
consolation bracket, Williams-Ragsdale
defeated Timberline's Malachi Earlywine
with a 4:23 pin. He tied with Mac Davis
from Gig Harbor for third place.
"Caleb placed third in the first wrestling
competition of his life," Lacy said.
Shelton senior Jakeob Garrick also
received a bye in his first round, at 138

two to reach the final round. There, he lost
to Timberline's Cole Stevens by a pin at 56
seconds into the match. Anderson took sec-

pia," Lacy said. "Ben was dominant in this
"Jakeob is in the process of overcoming
a serious ankle injury and really had to
tough-out a couple of competitive matches
to place third," Lacy said.

defeated Brendan McGill from Prairie by
decision 10-3 and then won by decision 5-4
over Thomas Woo from W.F. West in Che-
halis. To tie for third with Elijah Kirk from
Prairie, Olivas won by decision over Shelby
Spahr from W.F. West in Chehalis.
"Benny learned lessons from early in
the day and battled back to a third-place
finish," Lacy said. "His last match required
a flurry of action in the third period to
overcome a tough opponent."
The Highclimbers are set to compete in
their first dual meet of the season at 6 p.m.
