A festive spirit was in the air for the sec-
ond annual MissileToe Mile last weekend.
On Saturday, runners donned tutus
with bells, elf caps and Santa hats to run
1 mile through downtown Shelton in the
40-degree weather.
Kenna Valentich, 17, from Olympia,
started the event off with a dominant per-
formance in the women's race. Valentich
defended her first-place title from last year
and l=roke the women's course record with
a time of 5 minutes, 42.62 seconds.
She said she was excited to win the race
again this year.
"I won last year, so my goal was to beat
last year's time, which I did, so I'm happy,"
Valentich said.
As the overall race winner for the wom-
en, Valentich won $50.
"I wish I could spend it on myself, but
I'll probably buy Christmas gifts with it,"
she said.
Valentich said she travels to local races.
Her friends in Shelton told her about the
MissileToe Mile last year.
"Since cross country is over, I need to
think about shorter races," she said. "Plus,
$50, who wouldn't want to win that? Plus,
I needed to defend my title."
Her course time last year was 5:54.
Following the women's race, the men
took to the streets of Shelton. Shelton Har-
rier Cody Williamson, 16, won the men's
race in 4:30.26, slightly more than half a
second ahead of Nathan Morgan in second
place.
"I knew it was going to be a fun race as
soon as Nathan showed up," Williamson
said.
He said the two of them -- teammates
on the Shelton High School cross country
team last year when Morgan was a senior
-- stayed together throughout the race.
"I was on his shoulder, then we turned
the corner and we were shoulder to shoul-
der," Williamson said. "I was just barely
able to pull ahead with about 600 meters
left. It was a good race; I love running
against N-Dog."
With his first-place finish, Williamson
broke last year's course record of 4:32, set
by Andrew Prentice. He also won $50.

money," Williamson said. "It's got to go in
my bank account first. I'll probably buy a
new pair of running shoes; these are going
out."
He said he enjoys the MissileToe Mile
because the course is straightforward.
"It's a nice u-course and the road makes
you feel like you're running faster than you
are," Williamson said. "It's nice running
down Railroad Avenue because people are
waiting for the parade and they're cheer-
ing for you."
The run was sponsored by the nonprofit
running organization the Shelton Harri-
ers.
"This is an awesome event that we plan
to sustain and grow in the coming years,"
said John Johnson with the Shelton Harri-
ers. "We feel it is an event that will be em-
braced by hundreds of racers and runners."
He said downtown Shelton is a beauti-
ful place at Christmas and that the 1-mile
distance is unique in road racing.
"The word is spreading as more people
participate and have a good time," Johnson
said. "Kristmas Town Kiwanis has been
supportive of our event, and we appreciate
that."
