!',~i¸ ~i" ~ I TRACY ARMSTRONG BUSTS THROUGH the off-tackle hole but fumbles the ball as he is tackled by an Olympia defensive lineman in Friday night's tussle with the Bears. Coming up to make the play is a defensive end to the left. A Bear halfback (20) recovered the fumble to give Olympia the ball in Climber territory. By CHARLES GAY Kevin Dorcy sank a 20-foot jumper with three seconds on the clock to give the Shelton Highclimbers a 67-65 win in their opening game Saturday evening in Shelton Gym. Burning the nets in the first q~arter, the Climbers jumped tea 2~-13 lead, which they proceeded to blow, until it was tied with about two minutes to go. Shelton held a 41-32 halftime advantage, and a 55-47 third quarter edge, but Central Kitsap was coming on, taking advantage of costly Climber turnovers. They tied the score at 63-63, which was the best position they had been in all night. For the first time in the game, the visiting Cougars took the lead, 65-63, and it looked as though the momentum was swinging toward them. Shelton tied the game up again when Bruce Cole tapped in a team mate's shot, and it was 65-65. Then, Bill Bacon's man was charged with an offensive foul, and Shelton got the ball with about half a minute on the clock. Calling time out, Head Coach Terry Gregg calmed his troops and sent them back onto the floor. They worked the ball around for approximately 30 seconds and then Dorcy went up from the top of the key and swished a snot of from 20 to 22 feet. The Cougars called time out, but there were only two seconds left. Mike Bac did not let the Cougars get a chance at a last desperation basket; he stole the inbounds pass and hung on. For the Climbers it was an amazing shooting story. They hit 50 per cent during the game and had an even better percentage in the initial period. Dorcy's shots hit little but the bottom of the nets all night, and he was the game's leading scorer with 23 points. He had ten of those in the first quarter. Bruce Cole, the Climbers' 6'4" center, had a sizzling first period in which he made five buckets and three of four foul shots for 13 points, nearly half of Shelton's first quarter total. He ended up with just one less point than Dorcy. Shelton was outplayed pointwise in the second, third and fourth quarters, but their huge first period lead allowed them a cushion most of the game. When it got tight in the last frame, it gave fans memories of last season's close games, few of which the Climbers lost. Central was in early foul trouble, but ended up with fewer fouls than Shelton for the game. They converted on 15 of 21 foul shots while Shelton made nine of 16 free shots. Only three Climbers stepped to the line for foul shots. Cole was four for six, Dorcy one of three, and Bacon four of seven. Bacon had four in the third quarter. He was Shelton's third leading scorer with ten points. Mike Bac had eight, and Rich Walker had four to round out the scoring. Steve Sparks kept up a family basketball tradition as he scored 25 points in the Shelton Junior | High Blazers' game with Hoquiam ! which the Blazers won easily, 54-36, in Shelton Gym Thursday afternoon. Coach Jack Marquett said his squad played good defense and performed well for early in the season. The Blazers allowed only six points to go on the scoreboard for Hoquiam in each of the first two quarters while scoring many themselves. They jumped to a huge 23-6 first quarter edge, a 30-12 halftime advantage, and led by 20 at the close of the third quarter, 45-25. Sparks has been preceeded by two brothers, Jerry and Mike, who both burned Shelton nets throughout their basketball careers in the town. After being down by ten at times in the second stanza, Shelton fought back to a 27-21 halftime deficit. The third quarter saw the hosts outscore Elma 14-9 to trail by just one at 36-35. In the last frame, the Eagles got ahead by six quickly and used the lead as a cushion, drawing numerous fouls and converting on many of the free throws.
