ANDERSON, CARDINAL, CROW GET
HONOR AWARDS;
Teamnmtes honored Glen An-
derson, Ken Cardinal and Cec
Crow with tile three honorary
hwards voted annually to n]em-
bers of the Higlelimber football
team at tile annual Kiwanis Club
football banquet held in tile Ma-
SOl]iC Tenlplc last wec.k.
Anderson won tile coveted Ac-
tive Club Inspirational Trophy,
Cardinal was voted the honorary
team captaincy, and C l'O\\;V \\;\" [I A
awarded the George Hermes lxled-
al for blocking and tackling. All
t h r e e honors were hestoWed
through vote of tlle varsity team
members and were unknown even
to the team's members before
their announcement at the ban-
quet.
ONE HUNDRED and sixty I,:i-
wanians, football squad/menabers
and their fathers coaches, and
football fans sat in on a highly
interesting and enjoyable program
arranged by Hank Bacon• who
doubled as master-of-ceremonies,
Kiwanis Club President Fred
Beckwith. and Kiwanis President-
Elect Emil Lauber.
Besides the announcement of the
honorary award winners, the l)ro-
gram included a delicious llam din-
ner prepared by the Eastern Star
ladies and ,served by tile Rainbow
Girls, an inspirational and oft.on
hilarious talk by Tubby Graves,
popular University of Washington
athletic staff member, colored mo-
tion films of the 1946 Washington-
Oregon football game and last
summer's big crew regatta on
Lake Washington, musical inter-
ludes by the "German Band" and
a 12-voice group compose(:( of
nlembers of the football qhad,'
and brief talks hy George Hermes,
Norm Hillyard, and Ken Cardinal.
IN HIS feature spot on the pro-
gram, Tubby Graves expressed a
strong dislike for the highly spec-
ialized game football has turned
into the past couple of years.
"Tile only way football has ira,
proved is in the fact that many
more people come to see the
games today," he commented.
"For myself. I don't like all these
specialists the coaches carry on
their squads today, one guy do-
ing nothing but block on weak
side plays, another specializing in
blocking on strong side plays,
some playing only on defense and
others only on offense. I liked
the game best when players
learned to do everything."
GRAVES expressed the opinion
that athletics are the first Dlace
a youth gets his concepts of law
and order, of personal behavior'.
of self-sacrifice for the benefit of
tile team• where he learns to stop
alibiing for his mistakes and gets
his first lessons in self respect.

Keep Christmas
Trees Greener
Put your Christmas tree tnto a
can of water and it will stay green
longer and will be less of a fire
hazard. Washington State Col-
lege forestry experts recommend
water in preference to chemicals.
Before setting the tree into the
container, make a fresh diagonal
cut of tile stem. This removes
any hardened resins that have ac-
cumulated in the first inch or two
of wood at the butt and removal
of this wood allows the tree to
absorb water more easily.
Put sand or stones with the wa-
ter in the container to help hold
the tree erect. The contalner caia
then be covered with cotton bat-
ting', tissue paper, or other:Chits'tz
mas covering.
J Place the tree as far away as
possible from any heating device

Completed conservation prac-
tices should be reported by farm-
ers to the County Agricultural
Conservation Committee or at the
county office, says Bert Rau,
chairman of the Agricultural Cod-
servation Association. Delay in
reporting will delay payments, he
said.
All conservation practices under
the 1947 Agricultural program
must be completed by December
31st, 1947, but farmers who have
toinplted practices Should not
wait until then to report.
This cooperation with the coun-
ty office will be helping us do you
a better job and will speed up pay-
ments, Mr. Rau said.
Mr, Rail explained that frrnrs
themselves have a responibllit: in
supplying ttv county office with
the neceisar evidence Of prac-
tices cat, tied Out. Failure to re-
port adds to the cost of adminis-
tering th program and results
m unnecessary delay.
