ternate to state last year. He's a
senior.
"Juan Lopez, a senior, wrestled
at regionals last year. Has been
doing a great job so far this sea-
son.
"Jacob Nikolaisen placed at the
regional tournament last year and
was very close to making it to the
state meet as well. He's a senior.
"Logan Roadman was one vic-
tory away from going to the state
tournament last year. So, in other
words, he won, like, one less match
than like Brett.
"Kim Yates was a state partici-
pant last year in the girls' tourna-
ment. Junior.
"Ron Yates was a regional alter-
nate last year. He's a senior.
"Nathan Zoren is a senior. He
wrestled at regionals last year as
well.
SO REALLY LOADED, ex-
perience-wise? The Climbers as a
team?
"Uh-huh," says Coach. "A lot of
experience back."
Perhaps the most here in years,
even?
"Yes it is," says Lacy. "A few
years ago we had a team that was
like this. But not a lot of those kids
actually made it into the room that
year."
To their credit, adds Coach, this
season's bunch appears to suffer no
such disinclination when it comes
to committing to that infamous
padded wing of the Minidome.
And that alone bodes well, he
assures.
"AND THEN WE'VE got a good
group o' young kids comin' up that
have already shown some prom-
ise and done some good things for
us," says Lacy - and he introduces
them:
"Josh Ackley, a ninth-grader, is
doin' really well. Westin Chavez
is showin' a lot of promise. He's a
junior - at heavyweight - and has
really improved a lot. Hyun Jin
Cheoh is a foreign-exchange stu-
dent from Korea, and he's never
wrestled before. But he's a quick
learner.
"Jonathan Free has been doin' a
nice job. He's a sophomore. Taylor
Gettle is a freshman at 189, and
he's really doin' good work for us.
Adam Golder is a junior at 215
and 285. Jesse Matz is a newcom-
er. Senior.
"Norah Montoya is a freshman
at 119. Doug Pala has shown a lot
of promise for a sophomore, at 125.
Sheridan Peckham is doing very
well at 119. He's a freshman.
"DAMION SHEHAN is al-
ready in our varsity lineup. He's
a sophomore. Had a great season
at the junior high last year. He's
wrestlin' 145 for us right now, and
he's a sophomore.
"Michael Tratnick is back out
after wrestling a lot as a kid, and
he's a sophomore at 189. Nathan
VanCleave is a big 'ol sophomore
at 285. Alex Woods had a big vic-
tory for us last weekend. He's a
sophomore, and he wrestles 160.
And Chris Yando is a ninth-grader
at 103."
AND HOW DOES Lacy char-
COACH CHRIS LACY puts his hands together for a job well done dur-
ing the Climbers' home opener last Thursday against North Thurston.
That's senior Isaac Garfias (left) stalking his 215-pound rival in the in-
set and Shelton teammates Logan Roadman (escaping, right) and Sarah
Brownstein (scissoring out, left) battling their respective Ram foes in
the nearmost shots.
acterize this Climber contingent?
"This group o' kids has really
worked hard," he says. "And espe-
cially the remaining kids from last
year's team.
They're really close, and they're
a very focused group onto what
they want to accomplish as a
team. They understand their most
important thing is to have indi-
vidual goals and reach them, but
as a team they care a lot about
each other and have worked really
hard.
"So it's gonna be a lot of fun this
year."
BACK TO COACH alongside
Lacy this season are veterans
Roger Wilson, Rodgar Garrick and
Mike Gettle along with volunteers
James Hartley and Nick Stigall.
And joining the team this year as
a volunteer as well is Coach Wil-
son's son, Lanny.
Team managers are Brittany
Mills, Brittany Chamberlin and
Mattie Sobotka.
