Plenty to do for cleanup
THERE WAS PLENTY of work to do in the wake of last
week's wind and rain. Pictured clockwise from the up-
per left are: a hole in the dike located across Skokom-
ish Valley Road from Skokomish Community Church;
two men with shovels digging out a house swamped
with mud on Holiday Beach; a woman working her way
through the mess at a bridge that lets a creek pass under
Highway 101; evidence tape placed by the Mason County
Sheriff's Office around the house on 101 where 22-year-
old Michael A. Glenn died beneath a mudslide; vehicles
and Christmas decorations treading water in front of a
house on 101; Marty Crosson of PUD 1 making his way
past one of the numerous mudslides that obstructed traf-
fic between Hoodsport and Lilliwaup on 101; and a state
worker using heavy equipment to move sandbags used
to protect the George Adams Fish Hatchery from the
surging waters. State officials said Wednesday afternoon
that by Friday they plan to reopen a 37-mile stretch of
101 between Hoodsport and Quilcene, though motorists
may still experience delays during cleanup. "We hired
contractors to speed the work along," said Joyce Komac
of the Washington Department of Transportation. "They
need to complete a substantial amount of work before
the roadway is safe to open to traffic."
