Food drive went well Proud of Fu
Editor, The Herald:
We at the North Mason Food
Bank would like everyone to know
that handing out the Thanksgiv-
ing baskets was a great success.
We handed out 192 baskets.
Now, we're hoping Christmas will
be just as good (if not better). Be-
sides handing out the food for a
wonderful Christmas dinner, we
also want to hand out toys to the
parents to put under their trees
for Christmas morning. We are
also going to try to hand out gifts
for the parents.
Any gifts can be donated di-
rectly to the food bank. Please
have them gift-tagged, age- and
gender-appropriate, if they are
wrapped. We will also have San-
ta's helpers on hand to wrap gifts.
Santa will be at the food bank
December 17 through December
20 to meet the children and have
their pictures taken. For a list of
thiugs needed this year, please
call 275-94615 during the hours
we are open, or stop by and get
an updated list. Cash donations
can be mailed to P.O. Box 421,
Belfair, 98528.
We here at the food bank would

Editor, The Herald:
This is a response to Mr. Stock-
ler's letter published in The Herald
on December 6 under the headline
"NMEA has taken power."
Students who feel good about
themselves tend to be good stu-
dents. They generally pass, or even
excel, in their lessons. People who
feel good about themselves tend to
be competent, caring people who
do good work in whatever they do
in life. What's wrong with that?
Some of the most well-written
letters to the editor come from
students. Many I've read, these
past years, demonstrate the thor-
ough research, knowledge and
thought that went into them. I
wish more students would write
letters to the editor. After read-
ing Mr. Stockler's letter and hav-
ing had the privilege to talk with
teens today, I'd prefer to read let-
ters from the latter.

Editor, The Herald:
Curt Fugere has just completed
his term as Mason County Fire
Commissioner for Fire District 3
here in Grapeview, resigning just
a few weeks ahead of the end of the
six-year term (which is year-end).
As chair of the board of Fire
District 3, I want to take this op-
portunity to offer Our appreciation
on behalf of the fire district, the
Grapeview community and the
Grapeview Community Associa-
tion. All of these entities have ben-
efited from his unselfish dedication
and time commitment. I don't know
of any commissioner who takes on
this position for the money. Those
of us who have served, have done
so to "give something back" to the
community which has given us
a whole lot; to make this a better
and safer place to live.
Curt, like most of us, comes
from someplace else. We are a
great community because so many
of us have come together to enjoy
this way of living - from someplace
else. Without that sense of com-
munity, we wouldn't have what we
have here. Without a vibrant and
viable fire department (volunteer,
I would add) we wouldn't have this
quality of life. Curt Fugere has
contributed immeasurably to that
end through his service to this
community.
Serving in public service as an
elected public official is not all
fun and games. Tough decisions
are often called for which do not
endear themselves to all our
stituents. We've had to make
decisions on more than one
