Food drive went well Proud of Fu Editor, The Herald: We at the North Mason Food Bank would like everyone to know that handing out the Thanksgiv- ing baskets was a great success. We handed out 192 baskets. Now, we're hoping Christmas will be just as good (if not better). Be- sides handing out the food for a wonderful Christmas dinner, we also want to hand out toys to the parents to put under their trees for Christmas morning. We are also going to try to hand out gifts for the parents. Any gifts can be donated di- rectly to the food bank. Please have them gift-tagged, age- and gender-appropriate, if they are wrapped. We will also have San- ta's helpers on hand to wrap gifts. Santa will be at the food bank December 17 through December 20 to meet the children and have their pictures taken. For a list of thiugs needed this year, please call 275-94615 during the hours we are open, or stop by and get an updated list. Cash donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 421, Belfair, 98528. We here at the food bank would like to wish everyone a very hap- py and safe holiday season. Dan Teeters Belfair Impressed with teens Editor, The Herald: This is a response to Mr. Stock- ler's letter published in The Herald on December 6 under the headline "NMEA has taken power." Students who feel good about themselves tend to be good stu- dents. They generally pass, or even excel, in their lessons. People who feel good about themselves tend to be competent, caring people who do good work in whatever they do in life. What's wrong with that? Some of the most well-written letters to the editor come from students. Many I've read, these past years, demonstrate the thor- ough research, knowledge and thought that went into them. I wish more students would write letters to the editor. After read- ing Mr. Stockler's letter and hav- ing had the privilege to talk with teens today, I'd prefer to read let- ters from the latter. Editor, The Herald: Curt Fugere has just completed his term as Mason County Fire Commissioner for Fire District 3 here in Grapeview, resigning just a few weeks ahead of the end of the six-year term (which is year-end). As chair of the board of Fire District 3, I want to take this op- portunity to offer Our appreciation on behalf of the fire district, the Grapeview community and the Grapeview Community Associa- tion. All of these entities have ben- efited from his unselfish dedication and time commitment. I don't know of any commissioner who takes on this position for the money. Those of us who have served, have done so to "give something back" to the community which has given us a whole lot; to make this a better and safer place to live. Curt, like most of us, comes from someplace else. We are a great community because so many of us have come together to enjoy this way of living - from someplace else. Without that sense of com- munity, we wouldn't have what we have here. Without a vibrant and viable fire department (volunteer, I would add) we wouldn't have this quality of life. Curt Fugere has contributed immeasurably to that end through his service to this community. Serving in public service as an elected public official is not all fun and games. Tough decisions are often called for which do not endear themselves to all our stituents. We've had to make decisions on more than one sion and there will be more t0l made. Curt would never back from a tough situation tough decision and he always his homework first. Let there be no ing here. Curt Fugere was a close friend of mine and ant selfish public servant as one fire commissioners. His and tireless contributions to community of Grapeview will remembered for a long time. community offers its for a job "well done."
