The Shelton wrestling team began its
dual meet season and competed in a team
tournament last week.
The Highclimbers lost their first dual
meet to Timberline 46-27 on Dec. 6 in a
meet filled with pins.
"The team performed well and everyone
on the team progressed," head coach Chris
Lacy said. "A few opportunities slipped
through our grasp and Timberline wrestled
very well."
The Highclimbers won four bouts by pin.
At 132 pounds, senior Erik Smith pinned
Gage George in 5:23.
Sophomore Benny Olivas had a first-
round pin at 152 pounds over Brandon Lee,
winning in 1:51.
Senior Dylan Corey won by pin in 2:55
over Aaron Chayoga at 160 pounds.
Finally, sophomore Hector Gaspar
pinned Brice Vaughn in 4:23 at 170 pounds.
Shelton's final match win came from se-
nior Ben Anderson, at 285 pounds, defeating
Cole Stevens by decision, 6-4 in overtime•
"The match of the night belongs to Ben
Anderson," Lacy said. "This was a rematch
of his final at the Timberline Tournament
(from Dec. 1). The match did go into over-
time, but Ben was in control at all times.
Ben's takedown in overtime was at the edge
of the mat. His mat awareness and tenacity
earned the victory."
Shelton's first dual meet, at Bellarmine
on Dec. 4, was canceled due to a miscommu-
nication. As of press time, Shelton had not
yet rescheduled the match.

getting all of our seniors in the lineup. Our
young wrestlers have really stepped it up
this year and are competing well in all of
their matches."
While the varsity boys were at the team
tournament, the girls and junior varisity
boys competed at Foss High School.
"This was the first tournament for many
of these wrestlers," Lacy said. "Every wres-
tler earned valuable experience and every
wrestler earned at least one victory."
Among the girls, freshman Daynah An-
derson was the most successful. She was 1-1
for the day and tied for first place.
Seniors Shelby Fratello, Ivanna Bell and
Kaitlin Woods each went 2-1 and finished in
second place.
"Kaitlin Woods was very competitive in a
tough group and placed second," Lacy said.
"Ivanna Bell continues to impress as she ab-
sorbs the sport very quickly."
On the junior varsity squad, Jared Dis-
hon finished in first place with a record of
2-0 for the day. Lacy said his final match
was an exciting overtime match.
Sophomore Hector Gaspar also finished
in first place, going 3-0 for the day.
Seven other junior varsity wrestlers fin-
ished in second place, while the final two on
the team took third.
"Many of the wrestlers performed very
well, but coach (Nick) Stigall recognized
Kyle Vance for having the performance of
the day in a 10-8 come-from-behind win,"
Lacy said.
