most appreciated by all the cast.
Then after the large cast has
nursed aud rehearsed each and
every part, they can count their
blessings that they have one
more night to get a full night's
rest before the big event. And
the big night is December 16 and
the time is set for 7:30 p.m.
And all islanders attending are
advised to remember that their
will be a potluck array of snack
food following the show. Bring
crackers, chips, dips, cheese, cold
cuts, pickles, stuffed celery,
cookies or any dessert that can
be eaten with fingers, etc. Also,
there is to be a gift exchange.
Each man brings a gift for
another gent, the gals bring a
lady's gift and parents bring gifts
for your own youngsters with
their name on it.
During the meeting last
Thursday while the gals were at
the hall to decorate, one of the
main topics of discussion was the
book, "History of Hartstene"
which is in the process (or about
to be) of being published. It is
to be available sometime after
the first of the year. Up until
that time (the day the books
actually arrive), there is a
continous presale in progress.
Prior to the arrival of the books,
the price is $3.50 plus 75 cents
postage. The day the books
arrive here on the island, the
price goes up to $4.50 plus 75
cents postage.
Grangers are reminded that
Friday night they will be having
their regular December meeting.
There will be a potluck supper
prior to the business meeting.
Bring a place setting and some
good food and join your fellow
Grangers for a most enjoyable
evening. Time of the potluck is
6:30 p.m. and the meeting is 7
p.m.
This past week the island
folks were saddened by the lost
of yet another one of the
old-timers, Arlo Wingert. At the
time of his' death last Tuesday
evening, he and his wife were
making their home with their
oldest daughter, Lena Tober and
her husband, Norm and children.
However, Arlo had been
hospitalized for a time prior to
his death and was still in the
hospital Tuesday.
Ado was born in Vaughn,
November 13, 1894, the second
oldest of four children, to Jake
and Rose Wingert who were later
to become some of the very
earliest of homesteaders here on
the island. Arlo had an older
brother, Arthur, who also made
his home on the island, a
younger sister who lived in
California for many years before
moving to the island and the
youngest brother, Irv, who also
has lived on the island most of
his life.
When the family moved to
their home here on the island,
located at Jarreli's Cove, the
children attended school by
rowing around the cove to same
location where the present
school building is (now a private
home). After graduation, he
attended an agricultural college
in Oregon. And for a time he
lived with relatives in California
and worked on a wheat ranch.
June 21, 1934 he and Katherine
Evans were married. Her mother
was a cook at the Ballow logging
camp where Ado was working,
along with Arlo's brother, Art,
and Katherine's dad, too. For a
time after they were married,
Ario and Katherine lived at
Vaughn. Later they built their
present home and moved back to
the island. The couple have three
children, Lena Tober, Vera Pelzel
of Tacoma and son, Lewis
Wingert of Seattle.
For the past year or so since
Arlo has been in especially poor
health, he and Katherine have
been living with Lena and her
family in Lynnwood and have
rented their home here on the
island. A graveside funeral was
held last Thursday afternoon at
the cemetery here on the island,
with Pastor Mason Younglund
officiating with a large group of
family and friends present.
Afterwards, the island gals
furnished and prepared a
luncheon at the Community Hall
for everyone.

CREST
The key to the Crest's efficient operation
is its unique baffle system for horizontal
combustion...only the batten of your
wood fuel load burns while the top dries
in the heat, to drop into the flame area
as needed. The result? A full wood load
can produce heat for as long as 10 hoursl
The sturdy, cast-iron Crest is thermo-
statically controlled for even heating. It's
also built for cooking. And besides all
this, it just plain looks good in your room !
