"We still need to work on a couple of things," said Head Coach Terry Gregg, "'but at times we played quite well." One of the things to which Gregg was alluding was the Climber zone press. Reasonably effective at times, it suffered just enough of a breakdown just often enough to let the visiting triple-A Cougars sneak inside for cripples that prevented the game from becoming a complete rout. High scorer for the decidedly The Shelton Highclimbers, blistering the net to the tune of a 65 percent shooting average, powdered visiting AAA foe Central Kitsap 72-44 last Friday in the season opener for both teams. Led by the fine all-around play of seniors Mike Ashley and Jim O'Deil, who combined for 33 points, the defending league-champion Highclimbers were in command from the onset and had their bench all but cleared by early in the fourth Sharks compete in Sumner meet Six members of the Shelton Sharks Swim Club competed in an "A" swim meet last Saturday in Sumner. Taking advantage of a fast break that at times was as good as it has been in years, the Climbers jumped to a 34-21 halftime lead and moved away steadily thereafter. Fine outlet passes by frontliners Young and Rhodes, especially, and good point-guard play by first-time starter Grant Fox led to a number of breakaway hoops - several off the fingertips of guard O'DelI, whose 15-point total was second only to teammate Ashley's 18. As for big Mike, his moments were many. Twice he slapped away Cougar shots that looked for all the world to be foregone conclusions. Both times the deflected ball came down right in the hands of a Climber. But it was the 6-5 Ashley's offensive showing that had the capacity crowd bussing, and his sky-high tip-in midway through the second quarter was exemplary of that display. Senior guard Los Smith had broken free with a steal and popped a hanging 18-footer. I! was to be his only miss of the night. Ashley, who'd been trailing the play in third gear, me! the ball at its apex, about three feet from the bucket and probably a foot or so above it, and launched it with his fingertips in a downward arch straight througil the twine. It was that crowd-pleaser that sent the Climbers on their biggest tear, a three-minute spurt that extended a six-point led to the 13-point advantage the hosts enjoyed at the half. Smith, plaYing relatively briefly but with great offensive efficiency, was the Climbers' number-three scorer with eight points. Young added seven, Rhodes four and Fox two. Climber fans had an extended opportunity to see Shelton's bench, too. Seeing considerable playing time were juniors Phil Franklin, John Weber, Rusty Gigstead and Tad Smith and sophomores Mark Baker and Scott Eichhorn. Franklin chipped in six points and Gigstead, Smith and Eichhorn four apiece, while Eichhom was doubly impressive in his show of composure in handling the point-guard role, beating the press with surprising poise. Shelton "also won Friday's jayvee contest, toughing out a 51-45 decision over the Cougar jayvees.
