MTA g
ts new budget,
director, bo
rd for 2012
By NATALIE JOHNSON
At the Mason Transportation Authority's
(MTA) final board meeting on Tuesday night,
the board took action on several items including
a $9.5 million 2012 budget.
Finance Manager Sara Wazewski briefed
the MTA and Mason County Transit Advisory
Boards (MCTAB) on the final budget during a
public hearing at Tuesday's meeting.
"One of our goals was to sustain current ser-
vice levels," she said.
The budget includes $6 million of operating
expenditures and $3.4 million in capital expen-
ditures.
The capital expenditures budget was particu-
larly large this year, making up 37 percent of
the budget, due to an upcoming renovation of
the MTA's Transit Center in downtown Shelton.
The Authority received a $3.28 million grant
from the Federal Transportation Administra-
tion this year to take on the project.
The grant, along with $900,000 in matching
funds will turn the old National Guard Armory,
the MTA's Transit Community Center building
in Shelton, into a state of the art, sustainable
transit center.
The MTA hopes the Shelton Community
Center Association can help raise fimds to meet
the $900,000 matching fund requirement.
The 2012 MTA capital expenditures budget
includes $2,261,000 for transit community cen-
ter improvements.
The MTA pulled $1.4 million out of its re-
serves to help balance the budget this year.
%Ve will work to restore that fimd balance as
soon as possible," Wazewski said.
In addition to approving the budget, the MTA
board officially appointed Brad Patterson as the
transit authorities new general manager. The
MTA board announced it would hire Patterson
in November after a months-long hiring process.
"We're glad to have you on the bus," said
MTA board President John Campbell.
Board member Glenn Hoopman said the
MTA was drawn to Patterson immediately be-
cause of his experience throughout transit sys-

toms, rather than only in management.
"One thing we noticed when we were inter-
viewing him was Brad started out as a driver
and worked his way up," Hoopman said.
Patterson himself expressed his happiness to
be working in Mason County.
"I can't think of a better word, I'm blessed to
be here," he said.
While Patterson attended his first MTA
board meeting on Tuesday night, four MTA
board members attended their last. These out-
going board members include Mike Byrne,
representing the City of Shelton, Hoopman of
Fire District 3, Bev Wendell of Public Hospital
District 2 and Sadie Whitener of the Southside
School District.
The board also elected new officers for 2012.
Mason County Commission chair and advisory
board member Lynda Ring Erickson will act as
MTA board chair in 2012, and board member
Deborah Peterson, from the Hood Canal School
District, will serve as vice chair.
Mary Ogg was elected chair of the MCTAB
board, with former chair John Piety as vice
chair.
