important."
The park is scheduled to open to the
public in spring 2012 and Palmer is work-
ing to get the park ready for campers by
then. The park has been vacant for the
past year and windstorms have left the
roads hazardous and trees in danger of
falling on campgrounds.
Palmer has been spending much of
his time clearing out downed trees, sav-
ing some for firewood and using others to
make benches and fencing to keep camp-
ers on designated trails and driving areas.
"We're trying to recycle and reuse ev-
erything we can," he said. "This is, for all
intents and purposes, a national park.
There's talks in the future about adding
educational facilities."
Palmer said the work he's doing is a
family affair. His wife Emma of 22 years
and his 8-year-old daughter Katherine are
involved with helping get the park ready
for visitors in the spring and preserving it
for the next generation.
"We're trying to
recycle and reuse
everything we
can ... This is, for

purposes, a nationam
park."
Palmer may have spent much of his life
in other countries, and in other parts of
the United States. but he grew up in Ma-
son County and he said it will always be
his home.
Likewise, Palmer said preserving Ma-
son County for future generations of fami-
lies, campers and especially Boy Scouts is
a blessing and a privilege.
"It's such a beautiful place," he said.
"These are precious resources that we
have."
