By EMILY HANSON
At the start of its third week of play, the
Shelton boys' basketball team won its first
game of the season.
Before the win, the Highclimbers first
lost to Yelm and Central Kitsap the week
before.
On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the Highclimbers
lost to Yelm 53-42.
"I thought we made some strides but it
was a game I thought we could've played
better," Mark Jensen, head coach, said. "It
went down to the fourth quarter when their
leading scorer went off on us. We'd done a
good job holding him until the fourth when
we lost track of him."
Senior forward Jordan Harvell led the
Climbers with 14 points while senior guard
Austin Shirato put up 11 points and fresh-
man forward Sean Gorman scored six.
"It was probably a closer game than it
ended up being because we ended up foul-
ing late in the game," Jensen said. "We
missed a couple and they made a couple."
Jensen said the team• shot 12 of 20 from
the freethrow line.
On Friday, Dec. 9, the Highclimbers lost
at home to Central Kitsap 69-47.
"This was a little different story," Jensen
said. "They came out in the second half very
aggressively. They had a couple of players
who ran up and down on us and we had a
very poor third quarter. We shot two for 13
from the field while they shot very well."
Junior guard Dakota Andrews led the
Climbers with 13 points while Schirato,
Gorman, senior forward Thomas Cook
and sophomore guard Colton Hubble each
scored six points.
"We had lots of turnovers," Jensen said.
"We had 21 or 22 of them
against Central Kitsap
and the loss was a com-
bination of poor shooting
and not taking care of the
ball."
The team turned it
MONDAY: around on Monday, Dec.
Shelton ........ 53 12, when they defeated
Peninsula .... 51 Peninsula on the road 53-
51.
TOMORROW: "Against Peninsula,
Shelton vs.
we only had 10 turnovers
Gig Harbor, and we won," Jensen said.
7 p.m. "There might be a correla-
tion there."
Senior guard Curtis Wuestner led the
Highclimbers with 12 points while Shirato
scored 9 and senior guard Kasey Thompson
and senior forward Patrick Fabrizio each
put up six.
"I think the team felt good about the win
and they did some things better toward the
end of the game than they have so far this
season," Jensen said. "We shot the ball sub-
stantionally better than in other games."
Jensen said Peninsula was not as ag-
gressive as other teams the Highclimbers
have played so far.
"They were not as big physically and we
did a better job of taking care of things," he
added. "We didn't get picked and we didn't
throw unsmart passes."
As of press time, the Highclimbers had
not yet played at South Kitsap on Wednes-
day, Dec. 14. The team is set to play next at
7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 at home against
Gig Harbor.
"Gig Harbor has a couple of 6'5" and 6'8"
kids, so we'll have a tough time," Jensen
said. "They're real physical, too."
