Ina Wivell, whose paintings are now hung in Mason General Hospital, is a resident of Shelton; but for 40 years her home was the Wivell farm. With her husband, now deceased, she traveled the United States and British Columbia for the Jersey Cattle Club. She has traveled in Alaska and she is an honorary So/urdough, A cheschako First Class, a member of the Arctic Circle Club and a lifetime member of the Alaska Walrus. "Who wants to be an Elk or a Moose?" she queries. For 30years she enjoyed pack trains into the Olympics, where she wrote many poems about the mountains. She spent a summer at an old Hudson Bay establishment in Northern British Columbia. During World War I Ina Wivell carried mail on a rural route, and while her husband was hospitalized she sold books throughout the countryside. Mrs. Wivell taught school in Wisconsin, in Tukwila, Seattle, Bellevue, Pioneer and Shelton. Since her retirement ten years ago she has painted, now becoming more interested in watercolors. She holds membership in Shelton Art Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, and The Seekers in the United Methodist Church. She has two children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. African violets have replaced the extensive gardens once grown by Ina Wivell, who now visits Fir Lane Terrace Convalescent Center to bring friendship to the residents. "We sing the old songs," she explains, "and share coffee and cookies. We have a good crew but we could use more helpers." "In advance," says Dee, "I bake and freeze many cookies, leaving them unfrosted. On our special evening the kids decorate these cookies while additional batches are mixed and baked." Her husband, Gene, makes the spritz cookies. Ornamentation is completed by four-year-old Tori, seven-year-old Terri, ten-year-old Tony and Tracy, who is 12. "We make small holes in the cookies," Dee states, "so that we can hang them on a tree. We trim this tree with a very few small and bright decorations, but it is mostly just loaded with colorful cookies to be served to guests. "The kids think it's just great," she adds, "to take these cookies from the tree for their friends." Dee Brown was born in Olympia. At the age of 14 years she moved to Rochester and 18 months later to Toledo, Washington. The family next J ecora located in Chehalis where Dee completed her senior year of high school. "Dad was a logger," she explains. For two years Dee worked in the kitchen of a Chehalis rest home, after which she made her home in Port Townsend, employed in a similar facility. "I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when I lived in Port Townsend," she relates, "and I met Gene through church activities." Two months later Gene said: "We might as well get married and get this show on the road." They did so, and their first home was on Gene's Matlock property which was home to 30 peafowl, many crows and raccoons, three horses, a monkey and a pet turkey that slept on the porch and ran to meet Gene when his car drove into the yard. "Gene had lions at one time," Dee says, "but he didn't have them when we were married. I was accustomed to pets. Fortune is always on the side of the largest battalions. Marquise de Sevigne always had animals at my childhood homes, and I helped my dad with them." Deanna Brown describes herself as a country girl, and finds complete fulfillment in her beautiful and spacious Agate area home. "I have all the pleasures I need," she declares, "just in looking at this scenery and in caring for my family. I wanted our children to be reared where they had space to move around." Her children share July birthdays, and one big party is held in celebration for all. "It's Christmas in July," Dee laughs. The children, like their parents, love animals and there are many household pets which include two Afghan hounds and a poodle. Prissy and Patches are cats. Iggy and Ziggy are iguanas. Tomrnie, Dicky and Freddy are canaries. Two pet rats are called Sweetie Pie and Shannon, the latter named for an aunt. "We're also feeding two stray cats," Dee announces. Mrs. Brown likes to read when the house is quiet and the children have settled in to bed. "I used to sew a lot," she says, "'and I will again when Tori goes to school. Right now most of my time and energy is spent in caring for my family." Her cookies are waiting in the freezer for a family fun-night soon to happen. "There's still time," she urges.
