Floor exercise -- Kristi Manke and Val Van Horn, tied for fourth, 3.8; Vicki White, fifth, 3.3; Nicki Schouviller, seventh, 2.25; Karen Fuller, eighth, 1.75. The Climbers' Kristi Manke lost several points in the floor exercise when the senior inadvertently began her routine at the wrong corner of the mat. As a result, midway through her compulsories she found herself out of position and had to skip a couple required moves. "She had seen the others start at that corner and she thought it was mandatory," remarked Coach Keeley. "Otherwise she probably would have finished near the top." Keeley said she was not terribly pleased with her girls' performance despite the win. "Our performances definitely weren't up to last week's," she said, referring to the Climbers' season-opening win over Centralia. Keeley feels more emphasis on muscle-building is what the girls need most right now. "We have to strengthen up the shoulders and the stomach," she said. "That's where girls usually are the weakest." The visiting Climbers, now 2-1, trailed by as few as six points in the fourth quarter but "broke down at the end," as Coach Jack Marquett put it. "We didn't shoot or rebound very well," he added. "But North Thurston is a f'me team. They're especially tough on the boards." The jayvees were led by Mel Ferrier's 13 points. Stan Bourgault added 12 while Marty Rae and Joe Baze had eight apiece. Doug Christensen tallied six points. Marquett had special praise for the play of his sophomore pivotman Brian Martin. "Brian played his best ballgame," he said of the 6-4 center. "It doesn't show up in the stats but he did a heckuva job on defense." Doug Long Former Shelton High School standout Doug Long, named small-college All-Ame~an by the Associated Press last week, has added All-District 1 and All-Northwest Conference berths to his post-season honors. The 6"0" 190-pound wide receiver at Whitworth College caught 51 passes for 820 yards and nine touchdowns, good for third in the nation. His 51 receptions broke a Pirate record held for 25 years and helped the offensive unit to place first in the league and district in passing offense and sixth nationally. Attention all ye wrestling addicts subject to severe withdrawal pangs: Your fix is on the way. Starting tonight, after more than two weeks' layoff, the Highclimber grapplers play host to fully nine opponents in just five days. First-year school Capital comes to town this evening to test Coach Dick Wentz' young wrestlers, and then Saturday the Climbers play host to four AAA schools and three from the AA ranks at their annual Christmas Tournament. Finally, after a day's rest, it will be back out on the home mats Monday for the Climbers' league match with Tumwater. The Climbers' tentative starting line-up is as follows: 101 Matt Kamin - 108 Chet Chapman 115 Scott Valley 122 Dave Johnston 129 Clint Morgan 135 Dan Oliveira 141 Dave Cox 148 Rusty Wickett 158 Kevin Ridout 168 Tom Myer 178 Jesse Sharpes 190 Wayne Devaney The onlynew face in the line-up is that of senior Dave Cox at 141 pounds. Cox turned out only two weeks ago but got the nod when 135-pound Arden ~ Merriman, who wrestled in the 141 spot against Elma in the opener two weeks ago, contracted the flu. Senior Dale Brewer will also sit out at least the Capital match tonight, Wentz expects. The Climber, third at State last year at 148 last year, is still recovering from a bout with strep throat and Wentz says he'll "probably play it safe. although he may wrestle Monday." Featured in Saturday's tournament will be Shelton, Enumclaw, Franklin Pierce, Longview, Central Kitsap, Clover Park, Stadium and Tyee. The latter four are AAA schools. The visiting schools will bring with them a returning state champion in the person of Longview's Rich Medeiros. He'll be wrestling in the 101-pound division. Wentz picks Enumclaw and Clover Park as the strongest teams in the tournament, but said the balance is very good and the competition should be pretty even. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams and the first three places in each division will receive respective gold, silver and bronze medals. The league matches tonight and Monday get underway at 6 p.m. with the jayvee match-ups, while the varsity starts at 7:30. Tournament action begins at 10:30 Saturday morning, consolation rounds are at 5:30 p.m. and the championships follow at 7. CLIMBER BASKETBALL at its best. (For details see pages 13 and 14.)
