two teachers
The Pioneer School Board has
voted to hire two additional
teachers and to divide the fifth
and sixth grade classes into two
because of heavy enrollment.
The board, at its meeting last
week, instructed Superintendent
Bill Lupinacci to hire the two
additional teachers. One of the
grades will be housed in the
gymnasium with the move being
made as soon as possible.
The superintendent was also
asked to hire a maintenance man
to fdl a vacated position.
The board also asked that
specifications be completed by
the January meeting on the
heating system in the main school
building and the gymnasium.
The board, on the
recommendation of the teaching
staff, voted to adopt the Harper
and Row language art series.
It was reported that an
agreement was near on the
boundaries of the school site
property on Harstine Island.

Bicentennial year.
This one was prepared by
Clive Troy, a member of the local
Bicentennial committee.
During the year 1852 the
settlers north of the Columbia
River began to feel the necessity
for a division of the territory, and
desired to be set aside from
Oregon. Agitation along these
lines resulted in a call for a
convention to meet at Monticello,
a settlement on the Cowlitz River,
November 25, 1852.
The result of this convention
was that Congress was
memorialized to create the
Territory of Columbia out of that
portion of Oregon Territory lying
north and west of the Columbia
River. Congress, however,
overruled the petition in regard to
the name, as it would probably
conflict with the District of
Columbia, and decided to honor
the "Father of His Country,"
Washington.
On March 2, 1853, President
M//lard Fillmore signed the act
which created the Territory of
Washington out of that portion of
Oregon Territory lying north and
west of the Columbia River.

Poinsettia care tips
One of the symbols of the
Christmas season is the bright
bloom of the poinsettia plant. If
you have some of these colorful
plants, there are certain points
you should keep in mind, Harold
Van De Riet, County Extension
Agent, said this week.
During the Christmas season,
when you want them to bloom
their best, keep your poinsettias
near a sunny window or other
well-lighted area. Keep daytime
temperatures between 60 and 70
degrees. At night, place the plant
in a cooler room; 55 to 60 degrees
is ideal.
In order for your poinsettia to
bloom fully, you should have
been keeping it in complete
darkness from between 5 p.m. to
8 a.m. daily starting at the end of
September up until color begins
to show (at least six to eight
weeks). /
The blooms should last for
several months. In February or
early March cut back the original
stem of the plant to four-six
inches in height, removing the old
flower and one or two side
branches. Continue to keep it in a
sunny window and away from
Christmas plant, mistletoe, are
dangerously poisonot . University
studies have shown this is untrue.
A person might become ill by
[] eating a large quantity of either,
but this is an unlikely situation, as
both plants have an extremely
unpleasant taste.
Year-rou d care for
poinsettias includes: in the spring,
remove some of the old soil from
your poinsettia's pot and replace
it with fresh garden soil. Repot
the plant if it has outgrown its old
pot.
When night-time temperatures
[]
exceed 50 degrees, sink the
_.. potted poinsettia in the ground in
a slightly shaded part of the
garden.
Between JulY 15 and August
1, cut off the terminal portion of
all shootS. These can be rooted in
a mixture of half peat moss and
half sand, and flowered for
Christmas.
