Winter camping is not foremost'
among the popular outdoor actwi-
t;es of today ,and that is a shame,
for most of those who indulge
• ,wear it is just as much fun as
ummer camping- -or more so.
There are long weekends and va-
cations during the colder seasons.
A fellow has little competition
for choice camping spots dm'ing
the off season. The bugs and
,,makes are gone. The woods sre
often under a virgin mantle of
bright, clean snow and there is a
peaceful quietness. The blemisheg
and eyesores created by the care-
less summer campers unfortun-
ately among us have magically
disappeared. Instead of hot,
muggy days, the tenlperatur'= is
on the crisp and invigorating side.
And, if a chap goes with the cor-
rect eqnipment, he i, eminently
comfortable at all tmies.
ONE ITEM he simply has to
have is a good, wood stove, of
tl|e sheepherder wriety, for keep-
ing the tent warm. A-wall tents
are the accepted shelt-er when
using woodburning stoves, but
tllere is no law which states other
types of tents cannot be so era-
ployed. In something !ike an um-
brelh tent it is best to run the
stove pipe, by using elbow-joints,
out of an asbestos.metal ring
through the sidewall rather than
lhrough the roof. Make sure your
lent is rrge enough o the stove
is at least two feel from any can-
vas. One can cook on these stoves
too, of course, but having a good, i
petroleum-fueled camp stove for
use outdoors makes for faster and
more intense heat.
IN WINTER the nights are
longer and the camper can really
get in some impressive sack time.
And speaking of which, of course,
good warm sleeping bags are a
must. Clothing will be a bit dif-
ferent from summer wear, being
oi the insulated and woolen va-
riety. But, .here again, a. chap
needs nothing lie wouldn't ordinar-
ily have in the closet for hunting
or ice fishing.
The grub supply should be more
ample than that on a summer trip
'of like duration, for activity afield
is generally stepped up a bit dur-
ing this time of year, and Gar-
gantuan appetites follow.
The basic premise of camping
in geneyal is that beyond tie ftin
afield, it swiftly transports a man
from the routine of day-to-day
city living. He enters another
world, and by so doing gets a new
prospective, or, as ohn Jobson,
Campin Editor, Sports Afield
